PHILIPPINE

STANDARDS FOR
TEACHERS

The detailed presentation of the indicators of quality teachers in 37 strands along 7 domains
for each career stage is given in DO 42, S. 2017- NATIONAL ADOPTION AND
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PHILIPPINE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR
TEACHERS.

The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers in the Philippines states how the teacher
ought to act in and relate to the state, community, teaching profession, higher authorities,
school officials and other personnel, learners, parents and business. It also states how a
professional teacher ought to act and behave as a person.
SOUTHEAST ASIA
TEACHERS COMPETENCY
FRAMEWORK
PARTICIPATE AND
ASSIST
Note to Student Teacher: As you participate and assist your FS Resource Teacher in
her/his daily task, please take note of wat you are expected to give more attention to
as ask in the next step of this Learning Episode, NOTICE).

Participate actively by assisting your Resource Teacher in his/ her daily task. Take
the initiative to offer your assistance. Don’t wait for your Resource Teacher to ask for it.

1. Observe your Resource Teacher as she/he gave comments during her/his class,
her/his facial expressions, gestures, and actions in class.
2. Observe the students’ comments, facial expressions, gestures, and their
behaviors in class.
3. Discuss how your Resource Teacher relates to you.
4. Describe the classroom
atmosphere.
5. Write your observations below.

The classroom is sometimes chaotic since the students are still kids
and their attention is really short, but my resource teacher’s classroom
management is really good. During class, I observed that my resource
teacher is really patient in delivering the subject, and she also make sure that
her students including those students with special needs understand the
lesson. During discussion she also entertains the queries and concerns of
the class. Facial expressions and hand gestures are also on point, which is
also very necessary since some students are deaf and mute. I also observed
that my resource teacher is somewhat relates to me, because we are both
very passionate in this profession.
Answer the following questions based on the PPST, Code of Ethics, and
SATCF, and the TED Talk.

1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the TEDx
video that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?
Ans:
A great teacher must have adaptability, empathy, understanding,
patience, and, most significantly, communication and listening abilities.
Moreover, a teacher should also know how to communicate with their
students and humble themselves in front of them.

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies? Why?

Ans:
No, those competencies are also connected with the personal qualities
of a good teacher.

3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan

a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute and report
grades?
Ans:
No. On my own point of view, having the professional competencies in
planning the lesson plan, executing the lesson plan, managing the class, as
well as computing the report grades are not enough to be considered as a
great teacher. You are a great teacher if you can communicate properly with
your students, and inspire them to become great individuals.

4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important – personal qualities or professional

competencies?
Ans:
For me, I believe that both of them are essential in becoming a great
teacher. A great teacher possesses both pleasing warm personal quality
as well as professional competency.

5. Who are the teachers that we remember the most? What qualities that you will never
forget about them?

Ans:

I remember a lot of memorable teachers, being a good communicator,

having a pleasing warm personality, being funny on class, are the good
qualities that they shared in common and makes them unforgettable
1. Which personal traits do you possess? Not possess? Where do you need
improvement in?
Ans:
Personally, the traits that I possess are, patience, passion, classroom
management and fairness. On the other hand, the traits that I believe I need
improvement are sense of humor and enthusiasm.

2. Which professional competencies you are strongly capable of demonstrating?

Ans:
I personally believe that I’m strongly capable in properly delivering my
subject matter as well as capturing the attention of my students in the
process.

3. In which competencies do you need to develop more?

Ans:
I believe that I hit the classroom management competency, but it still
needs some improvements. During my class observation the class that was
assign to me has students with special needs, ADHD and DEAF students to be
exact. It was a bit hard for me to communicate with them since I don’t know
sign language and other’s personalities are unpredictable. I think that I still
need to improve this trait to communicate properly with them in order to teach
and assess them with their queries and difficulties.
1. OBSERVE -
In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that she has personal
traits such as being patient in communicating with the students, she also
emphasizes and listen to their concerns and queries. She also has
professional competencies like good classroom management. In delivering the
subject matter, she ensures that the students understand her. Professional
competencies like being on trend or updated about the latest teaching
strategies were least/ not displayed and as a result, students were/ class was
not so expose with the modern way of teaching. They are still using the chalk
and talk style.

2. REFLECT The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies

(mentioned in item 1) may be caused by:
Ans:
I personally think that the reason why my resource teacher uses chalk
and talk method instead of integrating technology and media in teaching is
because of her age. And she herself also is not that techy since their
generation id different from ours.

3. PLAN
I would like to address this problem by conducting action research on
how to integrate media and technology in delivering the lesson.

4. ACT
The main objective of my action research is to integrate media and
technology in delivering the subject matter in order to help the student keep
their attention and focused on the lesson.
My specific research questions are
I. Does technological integration affect the learning pace of the students?
II. What is the impact of technology integration instruction in schools?
III. How to implement media integration in the classroom?
To answer my specific research questions. I will ask for the school principal’s
approval to conduct study. I will also have to coordinate with my assign cooperating
teacher to gather information about the daily class of the students. I’ll also engage
and observe the students during class to really see the problems. Getting the
parents and the other teacher’s approval is also a good thing. Two class will
participate in this study, one will focus on chalk method while the other will utilize
integration of technology in teaching. I’ll observe as well as compare and contrast
the learning pace of the students both the chalk and talk method, and the one with
technology integration.
