Competency Investigate the Effect of temperature to the speed of sound

Code S8FE-IA-16

I. Objectives 1. Investigating the speed of sound at a given temperature

2. Determine the speed of sound at a given temperature.
II. Learning
Content
A. of Subject Science 8 Effect of Temperature to Speed of Sound
Matter
B. Science Ideas Sound are caused by vibrations , referring to the back and forth movement of objects.
Sound energy travels in the form of sound waves. These waves are examples of
longitudinal waves where the vibrations are parallel to the direction of the wave.
Elasticity is the ability of a material to return to its original form after a certain amount of
force has been applied to it.
Solid is the most elastic , followed by liquid and then by gas. Thus sound travels fastest in
solids and slowest in gases.
Density- refers to how closely packed the particles are in solid, liquid and gas form.
Denser objects have more mass per volume, and they have more compact atoms and
molecules.

C. Science Process Communicating, inferring, predicting, determining relationships

Skills
D. Value Focus Develop awareness on the importance of the propagation of sound through solid liquid and
gas.

Questions:

1. Based on the graph , what is the relationship of the speed of sound in air?
2. From you graph, find the interval where the speed of sound at t 15°C is
located?
3. Extend the line of your graph and find the interval where the speed of
sound at 25°C is located.
4. Use your graph to determine how much does the speed of sound change
for the given change in temperature,

D. Explain Lecturette : The speed of sound in air and properties of sound

E. Elaborate Lecturette:

 Sound waves are vibrations that travel through the air.

 Sound is transmitted in air through vibrations of air particles.
 Sound needs a medium to propagate. It is considered a longitudinal wave
 Longitudinal wave moves parallel to the motion of materials or particles of the
medium.
 Transverse wave moves perpendicular to the direction of wave travel.
 In longitudinal wave the compressions resemble the trough while the rarefactions
are the crest.
 The distance from one compression to the next or between two successive
compressions in a longitudinal wave is wavelength.
 The number of compressions passing by a certain point in one second is frequency.
 Speed of the wave is equal to wavelength x frequency. The trough is the lowest
part of the transverse wave and the crest is the highest portion.
Properties of sound
Like any other wave, a sound wave does not just stop when it reaches the end of the
medium or when it encounters an obstacle in its path. Possible behaviour includes
reflection and refraction.
Reflection - It is described as the turning back of wave as it hits a barrier.
Echo is an example of reflected sound.
Echo sounding – is the application of sound reflection that scientist used to map the
seafloor and to determine the depth of the ocean or sea.
Refraction – this involves a change in the direction of waves as they pass from one
medium to another.
Sound waves travel slower in cool air than in warm air.

Sound travels from high to low temperature.

Reverberation , on the other hand refers to multiple reflections or echoes in a certain place.

F. Evaluate Test I:
Instruction: solve the problem below. Write your answer on a separate paper.

1. The atmospheric temperature in Baguio City is 20°C. How fast does the sound
travel in the air?
2. What is the temperature of air if the speed of sound is 348.40m/s?
Test II: Fill in the blanks to complete the statement. Write your answers on a separate sheet
of papers.

1. The speed of sound in dry air at is 0°C is around ___________.

2. The speed of sound in air increases by ____ with every increase of 1°C.
3. Sound exhibits the following properties: ________ and ______.
4. The turning back of the wave as it hits the barrier is called _______.
5. The reflected sound is known as ________.
6. ________ refers to the multiple reflections or echoes in a certain place.
7. An application of sound reflection used by scientists to map seafloor and to
determine the depth of the ocean or sea is __________.
8. The ________ of sound involves a change in the direction of waves as they
pass from one medium to another.
9. Sound waves travel __________ in cooler air than in warmer air.

G. Extend Now that they have learned about the effect of temperature to the speed of sound asked
them: “Why would you hear the siren of a fire truck clearly in a nearby barangay during
nighttime than daytime ?” “Why is it quieter in areas with high elevation such as Tagaytay
and Baguio than in lowland?”

V. Remarks Lesson discussed was until engagement part. Will continue the discussion the following
day.
