Jesus Calls

Sinners to
Conversion
LESSON 17
Key Understandings:
Jesus constantly calls each one of us to go back to His
loving embrace.
Sin is willfully rejecting good and choosing evil; hence, it
separates us from God.
God’s grace of forgiveness is made available through the
Sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation.
How does the Bible present Jesus’
desire to call sinners to conversion?
Jesus constantly calls each one of us to go back to His
loving embrace.
Sin is willfully rejecting good and choosing evil; hence, it
separates us from God.
God’s grace of forgiveness is made available through the
Sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation.
Why did Jesus call sinners to
conversion?

Jesus calls sinners to conversion because it is

an essential part of the proclamation of the
Kingdom.
Baptism is the principal place for the first and
fundamental conversion.
What is conversion?

Conversion means not only an individual act,

but also the whole lifelong process of moving
toward closer union with Christ our Savior, in
His community, the Church, away from sinful
ways and habits.
What is sin?

Sin is an offense to God and others.

How does the Gospel present Jesus’
call to conversion?

Jesus continued and deepened this call to the

same conversion process. “I have not come to
invite the self-righteous to change of heart but
sinners” (Luke 5:32).
Can a person attain authentic conversion
in a moment all by himself/herself?

Authentic conversion then is not something we

can accomplish in a moment, all by ourselves. It
takes time and we need the help of our family, our
friends, and fellow members in our Christian
community to sustain us in our personal effort to
turn away from sin, selfishness, pride, and toward
Christ and God our Father.
What are the different dimensions of
Christian conversion?

Moral conversion – we spontaneously think of

turning away from the self-centered pursuit of
satisfying our own egoistical needs, and
toward loving service of others.
What are the different dimensions of
Christian conversion?

Affective conversion – involves our feelings,

emotions, and imagination needed to support
an outgoing love that overcomes the
temptations to prejudices, exaggerated amor
propio, oversensitivity, hatred and pride.
What are the different dimensions of
Christian conversion?

Intellectual conversion – redirection of our

affections can last only if grounded in a shift
in the ways we understand and judge the
basic meaning and value of our lives.
What are the different dimensions of
Christian conversion?

Religious conversion – happens through God’s

grace, when we freely respond to the Father’s
self-giving through Jesus Christ His Son, in
their Holy Spirit of undying LOVE (CFC 1796-
1797).
How can we respond to Jesus’ call to
conversion? (page 213)

1. Contrition or heartfelt sorrow

2. Confession of all grave/mortal sins to the
priest
3. Penance
What is the Sacrament of Penance?
It is a sacrament instituted by Jesus Christ in His love and
mercy.
It is here that we meet the loving Jesus who offers sinners
forgiveness for offenses committed against God and neighbor.
It permits sinners to reconcile with the Church, which also is
wounded by our sins.
