    (1907–1995)
    Angela Marie Legaspi Manalang was
    born on August 23, 1907 in Guagua,
    Pampanga to parents, Felipe Dizon
    Manalang (born in Mexico,
    Pampanga) and Tomasa Legaspi
    (whom she hardly mentions).
    Angela Manalang was among the first generation female
    students at the University of the Philippines. Angela initially
    enrolled in law, as suggested by her father. However, with the
    advice of her professor C.V. Wickers, who also became her
    mentor, she eventually transferred to literature

    It was also during her education at the
    University of the Philippines that she and poet,
    Jose Garcia Villa developed a lifelong rivalry.
    Both poets vied for the position of literary editor
    of The Philippine Collegian, which Manalang
    eventually held for two successive years. In her
    junior year, she was quietly engaged to
    Celedonio Gloria whom she married. She
    graduated summa cum laude with the degree of
    Ph.B. in March 1929. After graduation, Manalang-
    Gloria worked briefly for the Philippine Herald
    Mid-Week Magazine. However, this was cut
    short when she contracted tuberculosis.

    The Old Maid Walking on a City Street depicts the situation of an
    elderly woman without a husband. Persona is either the maid or
    an old friend of the maid who knows what the maid has done
    and decided in the past. This poem's tone suggests that the old
    maid has no regrets about her past actions. The poem was an
    insult to the female gender. In spite of the fact that the poem
    praises the old maid and justifies her actions, it becomes a
    gender conflict when the title old maid is used. Maid is usually
    associated with something low. The value of women who are old
    without a husband decreases once they become old without a
    husband. And these treatment are only for women. In our
    society, men who get old single are not disgraced.

    Aging is normal as a human being but sadly as time goes by


    being alone aging is hard especially to women since they can
    not usually find a significant partner at old age frame. Due to
    the fact that men prefer young looking females, some amazing
    women might be left behind by aging, but in my opinion,
    whether a person is married or single in old age does not mean
    that person is not living a fulfilling life. Most people grow old
    alone because being in a relationship isn't necessary to have a
    fulfilling life.
    Symbolism
    There are rhythm of a line of verse in the
    poem which is determined by the pattern
    of stresses. Speaking involves stressing
    some syllables and leaving others
    unstressed. The more words you string
    together, the more patterns you observe.
    It is natural to have a rhythm.. Meters are
    premeasured patterns of stressed and
    unstressed syllables used in traditional
    forms of verse (meter means "measure" in
    Greek). The majority of English poetry is
    composed of lines that string together one
    or more feet (rhythmical units).

    The poem emphasizes that a woman
    tend to be alone if she reach a certain
    old age, since our society tends to
    prefer younger girls in general and its
    hard for woman who age a little older.

    Although it is normal for humans to


    age, it can be challenging to live alone
    as one gets older, especially for
    women who frequently wait until they
    are elderly to find a fulfilling husband.
    Men love young-looking women, thus
    aging may leave some great ladies
    behind, but in my opinion, being
    married or alone in old age does not
    indicate that a person is not living a
    good life. Most people die alone
    because being in a relationship is not
    necessary for having a happy life.
