Network Cabling Workshop

INSTRUCTOR: UMAR SHAFIQ

Workshop Outline

 What is Network
 Briefly Discussion on OSI Reference Model
 Types of Media
 Types of cables in Networking
 Different Types of Ethernet Cables
 Hands-on Workshop
Straight-Through Cable
Crossover Cable
Rollover/Yost/Console Cable
 Troubleshooting of Ethernet Cables
What is Network

 Connectivity of two or more devices so that they can communicate with

each other is called Network

 Connectivity based on Hardware while communication based on software

 It means Network is the combination of Hardware and Software (IOS)

OSI Reference Model

Open System Interconnection model defines that how applications

communicate over the network
Seven Layers of OSI Reference Model:
Application Layer
Presentation Layer
Session Layer
Transport Layer
Network Layer
Data-link Layer
Physical Layer
OSI Reference Model

Application Layer:
User Interface, User Friendly software are operated on this layer

Presentation Layer:
To translate data into machine language and vice versa

Session Layer:
To develop a logical session between machines
OSI Reference Model

Transport Layer:
Fragmentation (To make small pieces of data to
reduce the risk)
Flow Control (To sync the speed of sender and receiver)

Network Layer:
Sorting and Distribution on the based on subnet mask
OSI Reference Model

Data-link Layer:
Local Delivery of frames between the devices on same
local area network (LAN)

Physical Layer:
Physical layer is nothing to do with data , just to receive
from data-link layer (Sender Side) to forward to the link
while forward toward data-link layer(Receiver Side) after
receiving from link/cable.
Types of Media

 Wired Media
Twisted Pair cable
Fiber-optic cable
Coaxial Cable
 Wireless Media
Satellites Communication
Radio Waves
Broadcast Radio
Types of Cable

Straight-Through cable:
(To connect different devices like computer to hub, switch, or router.)

Crossover Cable:
(To connect same devices like Computer to Computer, Switch to Switch.)

Note: Straight and cross cable follow the standard of local area network (LAN)

Rollover/Yost/Console Cable:
(To configure networking devices like Router, Switches and Firewall etc.)
Types of Ethernet

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) :

Types of Ethernet Cable

 Shielded Twisted Pair (STP):

Categories of Unshielded Twisted Pair
What are the standards for connecting cable to
connectors?

Following are the standards for connecting cable to connectors:

 TIA = Telecommunication Industry Association
 EIA = Electronic Industry Association

TIA/EIA maintains the standard of a network. It creates two standards. These are
 TIA/EIA 568A
 TIA/EIA 568B
TIA/EIA 568B Standard

How To Make A Straight Cable?
Requirements

UTP cable
Crimping Tool

RJ-45 Connectors
Cable Tester
How To Make A Straight Cable?

For making straight cable you have to connect connectors

on both ends of cable following standard TIA/EIA 568A or
TIA/EIA 568B on both ends

End 1 End 2
TIA/EIA 568A TIA/EIA 568A

TIA/EIA 568B TIA/EIA 568B

How To Make A Crossover Cable?
Requirements

UTP cable Crimping Tool

Cable Tester
RJ-45 Connectors
How To Make A Crossover Cable?

For making crossover cable you have to connect connectors at one

end following TIA/EIA 568A standard and on another end following
TIA/EIA 568B standard.

End 1 End 2
TIA/EIA 568A TIA/EIA 568B
