Writer’s Effect Class Activity

Read the paragraph and explain what kind of effect has the writer tried to
create by using this language? Mark 3 phrases from the passage.

Hint: Look for similes, metaphors, sensory language, onomatopoeia, adjectives,

personification, alliteration etc.

This question tests your ability to analyze the language used by the writer in the
passage and to comment on the effects achieved.
Write a small paragraph and describe the effect of using such words or phrases.

Potter doesn't wait for his partner to reach the safety of the permanent metal peg
at the top of the first stage but instead starts climbing straight away. This is a risky
procedure, but it's the fastest way to climb. 5 minutes later, the two are already
200 feet up, and my neck is sore just from watching them. As I back away from
the Nose to get a better view, I hear it - a horrible scrambling of hands and feet on
rock followed by a desperate yell:
“Falling!!”
Looking up I see O'Neill dropping through space, arms flailing, legs splaying like a
manic puppet out of control. Suddenly, he jerks to a stop - this puppet now looks
as though someone out of pity has cut all of his strings except one and he hangs
there, stunned, after plunging more than 125 feet. I can't believe he hasn't hit the
bottom.
The effect on the reader created by the writer’s words could be e.g:

 To stimulate our sense of sight, touch, hearing or smell

 To convey (put across) a particular mood or atmosphere
 To convey a sense of a particular scene or character.
 To convey a particular message or idea.
 To make the reader feel something e.g. anger, pity, fear, sadness.

Example:
In the extract, the writer describes O’Neill’s fall as ‘legs splaying like a
manic puppet out of control’. The use of this simile conveys to the
reader that how O Neill could not control his movements and the use of
the word ‘puppet’ suggests that his descent was out of his control and
he could not prevent it from happening.
