D. READING (30 points)
I. Read the following passage and choose the best answers to the questions below. (10 points)
If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will
cause a disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the
biggest mistakes, which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of
what his parents expect, and will fall. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage
to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do,
but are ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the
parents are very supportive of their child. Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about
music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and
violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons.
Michael’s mother knows very little about music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large
orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.
Winston Smith, Michael’s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents arc
successful musicians, and they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as
successful as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very
unhappy when he does not win. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and
now he always seems quiet and unhappy.
51 One of the serious mistakes parents can make is to __________ .
A push their child into trying too much C make their child become a musician
B help their child to become a genius D neglect their child’s education
52 Parents’ ambition for their children is not wrong if they __________.
A force their children into achieving success C understand and help their children sensibly
B themselves have been very successful D arrange private lessons for their children
53 Who have criticized the methods of some ambitious parents?
A Successful musicians. B Unrealistic parents. C Their children. D Educational
psychologists.
54 Michael Collins is fortunate because __________.
A his father is a musician C his mother knows little about music
B his parents are quite rich D his parents help him in a sensible way
55 The phrase “crazy about” in the passage mostly means __________.
A surprised at C completely unaware of
B extremely interested in D confused about

3
56 Winston’s parents push their son so much and he __________.
A has won a lot of piano competitions C has become a good musician
B cannot learn much from them D is afraid to disappoint them
57 The word “They” in the passage refers to __________.
A concerts B violin lessons C parents in general D Michael’s parents
58 All of the following people are musical EXCEPT __________.
A Winston’s father B Winston’s mother C Michael’s father D Michael’s mother
59 The word “unwilling” in the passage mostly means __________.
A getting ready to do something C not object to doing anything
B eager to do something D not wanting to do something
60 The two examples given in the passage illustrate the principle that__________.
A successful parents always have intelligent children
B successful parents often have unsuccessful children
C parents should let the child develop in the way he/ she wants
D parents should spend more money on the child’s education

__________ of water on earth has changed little since the time of dinosaurs. The problem has
been caused by people’s misuse of our water supply. This not only means that we have polluted
our rivers and seas, but also that we are wasting a great deal of this precious resource.
Unfortunately the destruction of the rain forests has (65) __________ this problem worse since
much of the rain that falls is (66) __________ because it runs off into the sea. The population of
the earth is increasing daily, so it is vital that we find a solution (67) __________ this problem
before it is too late. The first step is to educate people, especially by reminding them of the
value of water. For most of us it is available whenever we (68) __________ it, whether to bathe
in or to drink, so we seldom bother to think about it. People then need to be thought how to

someone sailing a small boat across the lake, wind or rain on that day will matter whereas a
farmer might be (73) __________ interested in the chances of rain over the next six months.
The one thing they (74) __________ need, however, is totally dependable information. And it is
for this reason (75) __________ forecasting is a very big international business. Today, because
the accuracy of forecast is important to so many people, weather satellites cross from pole to

4

Ancient Creek philosophers like Aristotle started weather forecasting by trying to
(76) __________ out logically what was happening in the sky (77) __________ them.
They weren’t always right, (78) __________ they understood the importance of systematic
observation. But forecasting remained limited so long as people only knew what was happening
in their own section of sky. It was the arrival of the electric telegraph in the 1830s (79)
__________ allowed forecasters to get a wider picture of the weather that was on its way. This
information could then be (80) __________ on to those in its path while it was still of use.
