Introduction:
Good Afternoon, Josh Hobbins here for your latest local news, right here in WA.

Intro (to Crypto)

Here with us today, we have Dr Spencer Bean, number 1 leading scientist in infectious
diseases and cancer survivor to inform us about an infectious disease known as
Cryptosporidiosis.

Good morning to you Spencer.

Good to see you mate, looking good Josh.
As always Spencer.
Dr Bean, why don’t you tell us a little about this "disease"

Well Josh, Cryptosporidium is a parasitic disease that commonly occurs as

gastroenteritis with symptoms of symptoms usually include watery diarrhoea
associated with cramping abdominal pain, dehydration, weight loss, fever, nausea and
vomiting. The sickness's duration varies depending on your circumstances but
generally ranges from 1-2 weeks and may be mildly self-limiting. Citizens with an
immunity imparity or those who are severely immunosuppressed, such as those with
AIDS, the sickness can be extremely severe and can even end in death. You see,
Cryptosporidium is passed in an organism's feaces, the parasite is protected by an
outershell that allows it survive for an extremely long period of time outside of its
body, and is resistant to chlorine.
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan; it is a single-celled parasite that lives in the intestines
of humans and other animals.
Cryptosporidium hominis and C. parvum are the two of the most common species
causing disease in humans, although infections with C. felis, C. meleagridis, C.
canis and C. muris have also been reported.
Millions of cryptosporidia can be released in a bowel movement from an infected
human or animal, and the number of cryptosporidia needed to cause infection is very
low.

Thanks mate.

Ok, but how can it be transmitted?

Well, Crypto can be transmitted through
 Swallowing contaminated water while swimming or drinking.
 Having contact with animals, especially calves and goats, and their environment.
 Having contact with people who are sick with Crypto, especially in child care settings.
 Swallowing Crypto oocysts picked up from contaminated surfaces, like changing
tables, door handles, or toys.
 Drinking raw (unpasteurized) milk or cider.
 Eating foods contaminated with Crypto.
 Exposure to fecal material during sexual activity.

Would you recommend trying to stay away from these?

Yes, I would Josh, 100%

How can you take preventive measures?

Encourage proper personal hygiene, especially after interacting with animals or

contagious individuals. When handling animals with diarrhoea or during calving
seasons on cattle properties, extra care must be taken to wash your hands. Drinking
water that has been tainted should be filtered or heated to boiling because chemical
disinfectants like chlorine are ineffective against oocysts at the amounts employed in
water treatment.

 Wash your hands often and with soap and water. Alcohol-based sanitizers are not
effective against Crypto.
 Do not swallow water while swimming.
 Wash your hands after contact with farm animals, pets, animal poop, and animal
environments.
 Do not drink untreated water from lakes, rivers, springs, ponds, and streams.
 Do not drink raw (unpasteurized) milk or cider.
 Use caution when traveling in countries with minimal water treatment and
sanitation systems by avoiding tap water, fountain drinks, ice, and raw foods.
 Reduce fecal-oral exposure during sexual activity and avoid sexual activity with those
who have diarrhea or who have recovered from Crypto in the last 2 weeks.

What should our viewers do if they have this disease?

Well Josh, most people who have healthy immune systems will recover without
treatment. If a someone has Diarrhea, this can be managed by drinking plenty of fluids
to prevent dehydration. People who are in poor health or who have weakened immune
systems are at higher risk for more severe and prolonged illness. Young children and
pregnant women may be more susceptible to dehydration resulting from diarrhea and
should drink plenty of fluids while ill. Rapid loss of fluids from diarrhea may be
especially life threatening to babies. Therefore, parents should talk to their healthcare
providers about fluid replacement therapy options for babies.
Anti-diarrheal medicine may help slow down the effects of diarrhea, but a healthcare
provider should be consulted before any medicine is taken.
Nitazoxanide has been FDA-approved for treatment of diarrhea caused
by Cryptosporidium in people with healthy immune systems and is available via
prescription.

Anything else our viewers should know Doc.

Yeah, nah mate. Just stay away from strangers mate.
(Chuckles) Thanks Spence.
No worries mate. Happy to help mate.
