Introduction :
The historical six points were proposed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The demand
for 6-point autonomy represents a deep and evident manifestation of the movement and
struggle against the Pakistani state's hard discriminatory behavior and inattention towards the
people of East Bengal. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the general secretary of the
Awami League, attended a gathering of opposition parties on February 5 and 6, 1966, in
Lahore. He called a news conference and made six demands there to defend the rights of the
East Pakistani people.1
Background :
In 1966, East Pakistani opposition leaders demanded a national conference to address the
political landscape in the wake of the Tashkent Agreement. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman put out
the Six Points, which demanded that East Pakistan have more autonomy. When the initiative
was rejected by Conference, Mujib was labeled a separatist. However, the Six Points were
accepted by the Awami League as a call to action for further autonomy in East Pakistan.2
The Six Points were a response to the political and economic inequality that East Pakistan
experienced. Although East Pakistan made up the bulk of Pakistan, neither political nor
economic advantages were distributed fairly to it. The Six Points were created to allow East
Pakistan more authority over its own affairs. The Six Points were an important turning point in
East Pakistan's history. They offered the Bengali people a voice and contributed to laying the
foundation for the Bangladesh Liberation War.3
