ASSIGNMENT
1. Define a Transformer
A transformer is a static a.c (alternating current) machine that
transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another at the
same frequency through a magnetic circuit by the principle of
electromagnetic induction.
2. What is the principal of operating a transformer?
A transformer uses the principle of electromagnetic induction.
Thus when a the secondary is an open circuit and an alternating
voltage V1 is applied to the primary winding, a small current
called the no-load current I flows, which sets the magnetic flux
in the core. This alternating flux links with both primary and
secondary coils and induces in them emf of E1 and E2
respectively by mutual induction.
3. State the types of transformers in terms of construction.
i. Core type
ii. Shell type
iii. Berry type
4. Name two types of instrument transformer.
i. Voltage transformer
ii. Current transformer
5. Define an auto transformer.
An auto transformer is a transformer with only one winding that
is common to both the primary and secondary circuits.
6. Name two losses that occur in a transformer.
i. Copper losses
ii. Iron losses
7. What are two uses of transformer oil.
8. What is the main use of transformers?
The main use of a transformer is to transfer current from one
circuit to the another without any physical contact between them
and without changing the frequency or phase.
DC MACHINES
1. What is the difference between a generator and a motor?
A generator is a machine for converting mechanical energy into
electrical energy while a motor is a machine for converting
mechanical energy into electrical energy.
