Premier Sensitive are the next generation of nitrile gloves, improving sensitivity, comfort and control without
compromising protection.
The latest manufacturing innovations in nitrile gloves enable the production of a lighter weight glove, with thinner walls. This gives a
level of tactile control and sensitivity closer to latex gloves, but without the potential to cause or aggravate latex allergies.
Premier Sensitive features include;

Second Skin Sensitivity

The advanced, but lightweight, construction gives a soft
and comfortable fit, relieving hand fatigue even with
extended periods of wear.
The thin walls give a level of sensitivity and tactility not
found with standard nitrile gloves.

Latex feel, but latex free

Premier Sensitive comes the closest of any of our gloves
to emulating the feeling of latex, while completely eliminating
exposure to natural rubber latex (NRL) and latex proteins.
The user also benefits from the inherent sharps- and
chemical- resistance of nitrile.

Grip and Dexterity

The finger texturing, combined with the overall material
design, ensures high grip and dexterity, even when wet.

Unique Appearance
The unique blue shade of nitrile Premier Sensitive makes
them easy to distinguish from both other glove materials
and types, and other nitrile gloves in our range.

Accelerators used in the production of some nitrile examination gloves speed up the production process and
improve features such as strength and sensitivity. However, these chemical elements can cause a Type IV
hypersensitivity reaction in some users.
Manufactured without chemical accelerators, Prestige Accelerator Free Nitrile Examination Gloves protect
from both Type 1 (latex) and Type IV (chemical) allergic reactions.
In addition, they feature;
A light textured finish that offers excellent touch sensitivity and grip as well as being available in two versions;
• Finger and Palm Textured – giving excellent full finger and palm grip in all situations.
• Finger Textured – for high grip when manipulating instruments, with the added patient comfort of a smooth non-textured palm.
Sterile and Non-Sterile options make them ideal for use in aseptic and non-aseptic procedures.

Hand Hygiene Guide

Hand Hygiene Compliance
To support compliance with hand hygiene in the workplace,
health care workers should meet the following standards ✗
while working:
• Keep nails short, clean and polish free.
• Avoid wearing wrist watches and jewellery.
• Avoid wearing rings with ridges or stones (a plain wedding
band is usually acceptable, but refer to local policies).
• Do not wear artificial nails or nail extensions.

• Cover any cuts and abrasions with a waterproof dressing.
• Wear short sleeves or roll up sleeves prior to hand hygiene
(refer to local dress code or uniform policies).

• Report any skin conditions affecting hands (for example,
psoriasis or dermatitis) to your occupational health provider
for advice.

Hand Hygiene & Glove Disposal

It is important to remember that glove use is not a replacement for effective hand washing. The two should
work together to protect the wearer and others, such as a patient or client being treated. Key requirements
are:
• When using disposable type gloves, your hands should be washed and dried thoroughly before putting the gloves on.
• Where client or patient treatments are involved, a fresh pair of disposable examination-style gloves must be worn for each
procedure and must be disposed of between procedures to avoid cross-infection. Never wash and reuse disposable gloves.
• If you need to stop work temporarily (e.g. to answer a phone) always remove and discard the gloves you are wearing and
replace them when you continue working.
• Always wash your hands after glove removal – gloves are not a replacement for hand washing.
• Moisturising hand cream, applied after hand washing, can help prevent skin drying after frequent washing.
Such products should never be relied upon as a physical barrier to protect the skin from infection.

Glove Removal Guide
Gloves should be removed immediately if any of the following occur:
1. As soon as gloves are damaged (or non-integrity suspected).
2. When contact with blood, other body fluids, non-intact skin and mucous membrane has ended.
3. When contact with a single patient and his/her surroundings, or a contaminated body site on a patient, has ended.
4. When there is an indication for hand hygiene.1

Examination Glove Standards Explained
We rigorously test and certify our gloves under a number of European and International standards.
This ensures the highest levels of quality and suitability for use in medical and non-medical settings.

Medical Device Standards

The Medical Device Directive (93/42/EEC) is the major legislation covering the Shermond range of gloves. This directive governs
all products with a medical purpose, from gloves and swabs to implants and prostheses
This Directive is concerned with ensuring that products are safe for patient and users, are manufactured in suitable environments,
and that products meet the appropriate product standards. The main standards for medical device gloves are listed below:

EN455 Certifies that gloves meet the requirements of the Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC and are

Requirements and Testing for Physical Properties

This standard includes tests for glove dimension and physical strength.
Gloves must have different strengths depending on the material they are manufactured from, reflecting
different properties of each material.

Requirements and Testing for Biological Evaluation

Includes tests for potentially hazardous materials that may affect the wearer or be transferred to a
patient. These materials include;
Endotoxins: Toxic materials left behind by certain bacteria which can be harmful to humans.
Latex Proteins: Proteins and enzymes in natural rubber latex (NRL) which can cause a severe
EN455 allergic reaction in some users.
Part 3 Chemical Residues: Accelerators are used to improve the strength of some gloves, but can cause
allergic (Type IV) reactions in some users.
Powder: Powders added to some gloves assist in donning, but can cause reactions in some
individuals.
A powder free medical glove should have a powder level of <2mg per glove.
The materials above are tested individually as well as collectively.

Determination of Shelf-Life
EN455 This standard specifies tests for determining how long a glove will be fit for use when stored in
Part 4 warehouse or end-user store rooms. 5 years is the maximum shelf-life that can ever be claimed for
medical gloves.

20
Personal Protective Equipment Standards
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is designed to protect the user from hazards in the environments, and as with the Medical
Devices, the main legislation is an EU directive; 89/686/EEC.
Shermond’s gloves certified under the PPE directive protect the user against common hazards found the medical environment;
Micro-organisms and Chemical Hazards. The main standards for gloves certified as PPE are listed below.

Glove Use FAQs
This section contains a guide to common questions posed by healthcare workers.

2. Why do I sometimes feel cramp across my hand?.

• Check the gloves are not “webbing” between the fingers and causing
resistance to free movement of the fingers. If so this indicates that the
glove is too small, and you should select a larger size.

• Use the ‘Glove Size Guide’ diagram on page 17.

3. Why are these glove thinner?

• Synthetic Nitrile gloves may appear thinner due to the more translucent material. In contrast a Latex product is
more opaque. However some gloves, such as Premier Sensitive, are thinner than other gloves made of the same
material.

• Despite differences in thickness, all examination gloves provided by Shermond will give you the necessary
protection for a medical environment. This is shown by the EN455 Part 2 certification listed on each gloves’ product
packaging and throughout this brochure. The properties of different materials mean they can be made at different
thicknesses and still meet this standard.

• In general, a thinner glove will provide a higher level of sensitivity and comfort than a thicker glove made of the
same material.

4. Why are these gloves shorter?

• Some sizes have shorter cuffs than others to ensure they are comfortable on different sizes of hands.

• All gloves pass the EN455 specification to ensure they are fit to be used as a medical examination glove.

• This standard includes the dimensions of the glove – so any variability in dimensions can only be within some
very clear limits.

22
5. Why do these gloves feel ‘grippier’?
• Gloves are often designed to have textured finger tips to enhance grip.
• Nitrile gloves are particularly good in wet conditions due to the ‘grippy’ nature of Nitrile.

6. Should we choose a natural coloured glove or a brighter colour?

• A natural Nitrile product can be selected because it physically resembles a Latex product without any of the
drawbacks in terms of allergic reaction.
• It is also easier to see punctures and blood splashes on a clean white surface.
• When Nitrile gloves where first launched they were more expensive than latex. Therefore coloured Nitrile
gloves (typically purple or blue) were easily recognised and their use could be actively monitored.

7. Why do these gloves make my hands itchy?

• Has it happened before with other gloves? In the event of an issue, the most appropriate course of action is to
contact your Occupational Health department.

• Sometimes a standard Nitrile glove, although free of Latex protein, may still contain enough residual
accelerators to provoke reactions in sensitised individuals. In this case consider the Accelerator Free Nitrile
Gloves on page 9.

• The virtue of Nitrile over Latex is that it eliminates the risk of a reaction when either the wearer or the patient
has a hypersensitivity to the Latex proteins (Type I or IV latex allergy).

8. Can we use these gloves with Chemicals?

• Please refer to the technical information sheets for each of the products for further information.

• There are a number of chemicals for which Nitrile does not give adequate user protection. However, the rule of
thumb is that Nitrile is a better alternative to natural rubber Latex when using lipid soluble chemical solutions
and solvents.

• An exception is ketones e.g. acetone. Ketones will permeate and weaken both Nitrile and Vinyl.

• The rate of permeation of chemotherapy drugs is significantly slower with Nitrile compared with Latex material.
