LABORATORY CHEMICAL GLOVE SELECTION

To determine the correct glove for your laboratory chemical use:

1. Consult Material Safety Data Sheets and chemical labels for general recommendations.
2. Select glove based on hazard levels below.

Hazard Level General Information

Low: • Disposable nitrile gloves are appropriate for most laboratory
• Incidental chemical tasks. Nitrile gloves generally provide better chemical
contact (occasional drip, resistance than latex gloves, are less likely to rip or tear, and
splash)- except for pose lower potential for skin allergies.
corrosives or toxins that
readily penetrate skin • IMPORTANT: Disposable gloves are not designed to provide
significant/ prolonged chemical resistance. After contact with
any chemical, disposable gloves should be removed promptly,
hands washed, and new gloves obtained.

Moderate - High: • Glove material must adequately protect hands from chemical
• Handling of corrosives and permeation/ breakthrough.
toxins that readily
penetrate skin • For selecting the proper gloves, review glove manufacturer
information on chemical resistance. See #3 below for
• When skin contact is likely information from several major glove manufacturers.
with carcinogens,
reproductive toxins, and
other highly toxic
chemicals.

3. Check chemical resistance data of several glove manufacturers:
