Geometric Series
Session Objectives:
1. Define infinite Geometric series
2. Differentiate Convergent series from
Divergent series
3. Determine the sum of infinite geometric
series
Geometric Sequence
– a sequence whose consecutive

terms have a common ratio.

If the first term of a geometric sequence is a1, the
nth term is an , and the common ratio is r, then

infinite geometric series
Convergent Series
A geometric series converges if the r-value
(i.e. the number getting raised to a power) is
between -1 and 1.

When |r| < 1, the series converges

infinite geometric series
Divergent Series
When |r| ≥ 1, the series diverges. This means it
only makes sense to find sums for
the convergent series since divergent ones
have sums that are infinitely large.

The sum can’t be determined
