Geometric Sequence

The lesson plan provides instruction on geometric sequences over two class periods. Students will learn to describe geometric sequences and common ratios, find the common ratio in a sequence, and calculate the sum of a geometric sequence. The lesson includes activities to practice these skills and an evaluation to assess student mastery. Assignments are given to further reinforce the concepts.

MATH 10 LESSON PLAN

Prepared by: Jonathan Ian S. Ubas Teaching Date: June 27 - 28, 2019

Time: Industrious (10:00 - 11:00)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. describe a geometric sequence and common ratio, and
2. find the common ratio in a geometric sequence
3. find the sum of a geometric sequence

II. SUBJECT MATTER

1. Topic: Geometric Sequence - M10AL-Id-1
2. References: G10 LM, pp. 26-30; http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/sequences-
3. sums-geometric.html
4. Materials : Visual Aids, activity notebook

III. PROCEDURE:
1. Preliminary Activities
1.1 Prayer and greetings
1.2 Checking of attendance
1.3 Setting of class mode
1.4 Collecting of assignments
2. Lesson Proper
 Activity 1: “Divide and Conquer”
The class will be grouped into 7. In 5 minutes, they are going to finish the activity below.
Direction: Find the ratio of the second number to the first number.
1. 2, 8 6. –49, 7
2. –3, 9 7. 1/4, 1/2
3. 1, ½ 8. a2, a3
4. –5, –10 9. k–1, k
5. 12, 4 10. 3m, 3mr
 Definition of Terms
Geometric Sequence -, also known as a geometric progression, is a sequence of numbers where
each term after the first is found by multiplying the previous one by a fixed, non-zero
number called the common ratio.
Common ratio, r - is the ratio of a term to the previous term. This ratio is usually indicated by
the variable r.
 Discussion
The Rule of Geometric Sequence
Problem: What are the first 5 terms of a geometric sequence whose first term is 2 and whose common
ratio is 5?
Other Ways to Write the Terms Geometric
Term
In Factored Form In Exponential Form Sequence
0
2 2 2 x5 0
ar
a a x r0
10 2x5 2 x 51 ar1
50 2x5x5 2 x 52 ar2
250 2x5x5x5 2 x 53 ar3
1250 2x5x5x5x5 2 x 54 ar4

Guide Questions:
Look at the two ways of writing the terms.
1. What does 2 represent?
2. For any two consecutive terms, what does 5 represent?
3. What is the relationship between the exponent of 5 and the position of the term?
4. If the position of the term is n, what must be the exponent of 5?
5. What is an for this sequence?
6. In general, if the first term of a geometric sequence is a 1 and the common ratio is r, what is the
nth term of the sequence?

Finding the nth Term:

(n-1)
The Rule for any term is: an = a1 × r
Example: 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 192, …
This sequence has a common ratio of 2 between each term
So, the 4th term is:
a4 = 3×2(4-1) = 3×23 = 3×8 = 24
and the 10th term is:
a10 = 3×2(10-1) = 3×29 = 3 x 512 = 1,536

Finding the Sum of a Geometric Sequence:

a = is the first term

r = is the "common ratio" between terms
n = is the number of terms
Example: 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, …
The values of a, r and n are:
a = 4 (the first term)
r = 2 (the "common ratio")
n = 4 (we want to sum the first 4 terms)
So:
4−1
1−24
∑ ( 4⋅2 )=4
k =0
0
( 1−2 ) ( ) ( )
=4 −1
1−16
=4
−1
−15
= 60
 Generalization
a or a1 denotes the first term in a geometric sequence while n represents the number of
terms given and r, the common ratio, is the ratio of a term to the previous term.

IV. EVALUATION
describe a geometric sequence and common ratio, and
find the common ratio in a geometric sequence

Direction: In Activity notebook:

1. Describe Geometric sequence and Common ratio
2. Find the common ratio and the first 10 terms of the following sequence:
a. 8, 4, 2, 1,…
b. –3, 9, -27, 81, -243…
c. 5, 10, 20, 40, …
V. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: In Activity notebook:

1. Find the common ratio and the first 5 terms of the following sequence:
a. 1/2, 1, …
b) –7, 14, -28, 56, …
c) 3/4, 1 1/2, 3, …
