ACRYLIC (Transparent Plastic Material Used in Aircraft Window)

Acrylic is a transparent thermoplastic material commonly known as Plexiglass. It was first produced in 1928 and used during World War II for aircraft windows, canopies, and turrets due to its durability, light weight, and transparency. Acrylic's basic molecular structure is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which makes it tough, highly transparent, and resistant to weathering and UV radiation, making it ideal for aircraft windshields and other applications. Some key properties that make acrylic advantageous are its impact resistance, UV resistance, weatherability, dimensional stability, light weight, and chemical resistance.

ACRYLIC (transparent plastic material used in aircraft

window)
Acrylic is a transparent thermoplastic photopolymer material which is
famously called by a trade name “plexiglass.” This is a versatile plastic material with
a variety of purposes and benefits, available in several of colours and opacities.
Acrylic plastic was first produced in 1928 and brought to the market by Rohm and
Hass Company around 1933. It was initially used during World War ll for products
such as airplane windows, canopies, and turrets. Acrylic is a cost-effective, durable
material less weight.

RAW MATERIAL
Acrylic plastic refers to a family of synthetic, or man-made, plastic
materials containing one or more derivatives of acrylic acid. The
most common acrylic plastic is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA),
which is sold under the brand names of Plexiglas, Lucite, Perspex,
and Crystallite. PMMA is a tough, highly transparent material with
excellent resistance to ultraviolet radiation and weathering. It can
be colour, moulded, cut, drilled, and formed. These properties make
it ideal for many applications including airplane windshields,
skylights, Automobiles.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION ACRYLIC GLASS

Methyl methacrylate is the basic molecule, or monomer,

from which polymethyl methacrylate and many other acrylic plastic
polymers are formed. The chemical notation for this material is
CH 2 =C(CH 3 )COOCH 3. It is written in this format more than the
common chemical notation C 5 H 8 O 2. Methyl methacrylate may
be formed in several ways. One common way is to react acetone
[CH 3 COCH 3 ] with sodium cyanide [NaCN] to produce acetone
cyanhydrin [(CH 3 ) 2 C(OH)CN].This in turn is reacted with methyl
alcohol [CH 3 OH] to produce methyl methacrylate.

 High impact strength

 UV resistance
 Innate weather ability
 Excellent dimensional stability
 Light weight
 Excellent chemical resistance
Out of all these properties, the
most advantage is its durability. Despite its lower price point,
it is 10 times more impact resistant than glass. In the unlikely
event that acrylic plastic does break, it will fracture into dull-
edged pieces instead of sharp, dangerous shards.

Bengaluru -₹90
FUTURE; The average annual increase in the rate of consumption of
acrylic plastics has been about 10%. A future annual growth rate of
about 5% is predicted. Despite the fact that acrylic plastics are one
of the oldest plastic materials in use today, they still hold the same
advantages of optical clarity and resistance to the outdoor
environment that make them the material of choice for many
applications.
