2nd QRT - Lesson 2 Synthetic Division

The document discusses evaluating polynomial functions and using synthetic division to divide polynomials. It begins by asking the reader to determine if given functions are polynomials or not. It then provides examples of evaluating polynomial functions at given values. The bulk of the document focuses on the process of synthetic division, explaining the steps and providing examples of dividing polynomials using this method. It emphasizes synthetic division as the simplest way to divide polynomials by linear expressions.

2ND QUARTER - LESSON 2

The focus of this lesson is to develop students ability in using the synthetic
division in dividing polynomial functions. The lesson will focus on four key skills.
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Recall the concepts Apply the process Differentiate long connect the
of evaluating
of synthetic division of concept of
polynomial functions
division in dividing polynomials and synthetic division
and addition &
polynomial synthetic division to the life and
subtraction of
integers functions. process. teaching of Jesus
LONG DIVISION ALGORITHM
Given the polynomials P(x) and D(x), where D(x) ≠ 0,
there exist a unique polynomials Q(x) and R(x), where
R(x) is either 0 or of a degree less than D(x) such that:

Divisor Remainder

𝑃 𝑥 = 𝐷 𝑥 ∙ 𝑄 𝑥 + 𝑅(𝑥)

SYNTHETIC DIVISION
Synthetic Division is the simplest and shortest way
of dividing polynomials by linear expressions of the
form x - a. In this method only the essential parts of
the long division are written.
STEPS IN UISNG SYNTHETIC DIVISION
• STEP 1: Arrange the polynomial function in standard form
then write horizontally the coefficient of each term.
Replace every missing term with 0.
• STEP 2: Write the value of a.
• STEP 3: Draw a horizontal line one space below the
coefficients and bring down the first coefficient
• STEP 4: Multiply the first coefficient and then write the
product below the next coefficient.
• STEP 5: Add the result, then write the sum below the
horizontal bar.
• STEP 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5
EXAMPLES
1. (2𝑥 + 3𝑥
3 2 − 4𝑥 + 8) ÷ (𝑥 + 3)

2. (2𝑥 − 11𝑥 + 9𝑥 − 20) ÷ (𝑥 − 5)

3. (𝑣 −2𝑣

− 14𝑣 − 5) ÷ (𝑣 + 2)

4. (10𝑟 +50𝑟

5. (8𝑏 −49𝑏 − 45𝑏 − 36) ÷ (𝑏 − 7)
