It is hard to say what my classroom will look like and a large chunk of that depends on my room
and how many students I have in my classroom. I would prefer that desks do not have a chair and
are low to the floor so students sit cross-legged. Students will arrange themselves in either a
semi-circle or a full circle depending on the activity. I want a classroom in which discussion is an
active medium for learning and for forming relationships. A semi-circle would probably be best
because I, as the teacher, can face my whole class, and a semi-circle would allow students to face
the board if I decided to write notes on the board or watch a video on the screen.
My non-instructional routine will involve asking students about their lives at the beginning of
class, occasionally taking 10 minutes to discuss current events, and playing games to keep class
fun. One game one of my highschool teachers played was with a dry-erase marker and the
objective was to toss it and have it land on the ledge on the white board. If it landed the class got
candy or 5 points of extra credit on the next test. I also will greet students at the door before class
and will have my room open for lunch! Lastly, I plan to take days off for breaks so kids can
spend time outside in the world and be kids, or so they can catch up on homework.
My instructional routine will vary but I view myself as a teacher who values discussion, lectures,
and note taking. So, my lessons will revolve around the 3. I know leading a lecture requires a
strong understanding of the topic and lectures take a lot of time to prepare. My hope is that my
lectures grow as I do. I love history and it would be cool to read about certain topics and then
lecture about them. Hopefully, overtime, I acquire the knowledge to discuss a panoply of topics
with my class and give them a strong understanding of the world and all the crazy things that
have happened. The notes my students take will be freeform, meaning I won’t give them support.
Instead, I will give them note taking strategies to use. The reason being that professors in college
will expect their students to know how to take notes and divulge important information. I also
believe tailoring notes to an individual helps their brain cognize the information and then can be
recognized later. Lectures will be a mix of discussion because I am not in a hurry to cram
information down students throats. I will ask questions and inquire on opinions and trains of
thought students have. Lastly, students will work together to do group presentations. They will
research a topic and work in and outside of class to make a 10 minute presentation on a particular
topic in history.

PHILOSOPHY
History is the study of the past, but it is contemporary. The past is filled with lessons and even a
basic knowledge of the past will better help reveal solutions to today's problems. Furthermore,
history is full of fun stories and characters to be inspired by. With history as a tool, we can better
see who we are as humans.
