4.0 LANDSCAPE SPECIFICATIONS
4.2 PLANTING OPERATION AND PROCEDURES
1. PLANTING OPERATIONS
Perform only during periods within the planting season when weather and soil
conditions are suitable and in accordance with the local accepted practice approved
by the Landscape Architect.
2. PREPARATION OF PLANTING AREA
Before excavation is made, cover the surrounding turf, if existing, in a manner that
will satisfactorily protect all turfed areas that are to be tucked over, and upon which
the soil is to be temporarily stacked pending its removal for re-use barricade existing
trees, shrubbery, and beds are to be preserved in a manner that will effectively protect
them during planting operations.
3. OBSTRUCTION BELOW GROUND
Remove any rock or underground obstruction to the depth necessary (min. 2’ 0”

deep) to permit proper planting, according to the drawings and specifications.
However, other locations may be selected at the discretion of the Landscape
Architect.
4. EXCAVATION FOR PLANTING WORKS
All excavation shall be in accordance with local accepted practice, approved by the
Landscape Architect. Planting holes for tree shall be of a minimum 1m x 1m x 1m in
size or otherwise specified. For shrubs and other herbaceous plants, a planting hole
shall be of minimum 0.45m x 0.45m x 0.45m in size or otherwise specified. All
ground preparation for groundcovers shall be tilled a minimum of 0.30m deep.
5. SOIL MIX
Unless otherwise specified or indicated on the drawings the following mixture

(thoroughly mixed by volume) shall be used for backfill around plants and herein
after referred to as “Soil Mix”. The following is the recommended soil mixes for
specific uses: -

* Necessary amendment such as applying GML (Ground Magnesium Limestone) shall be added
to acidic soils to achieve pH of 6.5.

6. PLANT PLACEMENT
Set all plants at the proper level so that after settlement, normal or natural relationship
between the crown of the plant and the surrounding ground surface exists. Set the
plant vertically and firmly, work and ramp the soil mix carefully under and ground
the base of the ball to fill all voids. When practically back-filled and compacted, cut
the ball ties and remove the burlap from the top and side of the ball. Cut or adjust to
prevent the formation of air pockets.
7. BACKFILLING
Every care shall be taken during the backfilling and tamping to avoid injuring the root
and to eliminate all air pockets. Any roots found to be bruised or broken before or
during planting shall be pruned immediately with a clean cut.

8. WATER
Thoroughly water all plants immediately after planting. This shall mean full and
thorough saturation of all backfill in the pits and beds during the same day of
planting. Apply water only using open-ended hose at a very low pressure to avoid air
pockets and injury to the roots. When planted, watered and fully settled, the plants
shall be vertical.
9. FERTILIZER APPLICATION
After planting backfill, prior to final watering and before mulching, apply to dressing
to all plants at the rates as indicated in clause (e). Following steady establishment of
the plants, apply commercial fertilizers of complete formula of 10 : 20 : 20 or
otherwise specified at the following rates:
Shade Trees - 1kg/ 25mm of caliper

Small Trees - 0.5kg/ 25mm of caliper
Shrubs - 400gm/ 300mm height
Evergreen - 65gm/ 300mm height or spread
Vines and Groundcovers - 65gm/ plant

WORK METHOD STATEMENT FOR TREE PLANTING
1. To get soil mix tested and approved.
2. To mix 3 parts of river sand, 5 parts of topsoil, 1 part of chicken dung and 1 kg of C.I.R.P per
cu. yd. Mixing shall be carried out using a backhoe.
3. To excavate 1m x 1m x 1m hole and backfill with soil mix.
4. Dried leaves or branches of trees and shrubs shall be pruned, polybag shall be removed and
bruised or excess root shall be cut before setting in the planting hole.
5. Plant shall be upright when planting and the soil surrounding to root ball shall be mildly
compacted. Staking shall be carried out for trees and watering shall be done thereafter.

4. Dried frond of palm shall be removed, poly bag shall removed and busied or excess roots
shall be cut before setting in the hole.
5. Plant shall be upright when planting and the soil surrounding to root ball shall be mildly
compacted. Staking shall be carried out for trees and watering shall be done thereafter.

WORK METHOD STATEMENT FOR SHRUB PLANTING
2. To mix 3 parts of river sand, 5 parts of topsoil, 1 part of chicken dung and 1 kg of C.I.R.P
per cu. yd. Mixing shall be carried out using a backhoe.
3. Setting out of the planting bed shall be carried out and shall be inspected and approved by
the consultant.
4. To excavate the planting bed by machinery or manually to a depth of 450mm and
backfilled with the approved soil mix.
5. To arrange and place the plant material on the planting bed as per drawing. It shall be
inspected and approved by consultant before planting.
6. Planting hole shall be dug manually to a depth equivalent to the height of the polybag or
clay pot container.
7. Polybag shall be removed by knife or blade and clay pot shall be broken with care without
damaging the roots and the soil holding on to the roots.
8. The plant materials shall be placed in the planting hole upright and immediately cover the
surrounding void with soil mix.
9. Watering shall be carried out immediately after planting.

4.5 HARD LANDSCAPE WORKS
4.5.1 General
The Hard Landscape elements to be executed under this Contract are: -

4.5.2 Material and Workmanship
a) The following description shall apply to the whole of the works regardless
of the trade headings under which they occur and shall be read in conjunction
with the drawings and the Schedule of Works/Bills of Quantities.
b) This specification is a standard specification and items specified which are

not shown on the drawings are not applicable.
c) The descriptions of the various items in the drawings and the schedule of
works shall be counted as part of these specifications.
d) Throughout this specification, all instruction shall be directed to the

Contractor.
e) In this specification the letter B.S. refer to the British Standards Institution,
British Standard House, London. The letters C.P. refer to the British Standard
Code of Practice issued by the Council of code of Practice. The latest
amendment is implied in each case. Where applicable equivalent Malaysian
Standards issued by SIRIM may be used in lieu.
g) The term Àrchitect’ includes the Architect’s Representative.
h) The term àpproved’ and directed’ are to the approval and directions of the
Architect in writing.
i) Wherever the word àllowed’ occurs in this specification, except with

reference to P.C. sums, the cost of the item is at the risk of the Contractor.
j) The word `supply’ in this specification shall include the term `provide’ and
`fix’ as usually understood.
k) Manufacturer’s and catalogue references quoted in the specification,

drawings and schedule of works are indicative of type and quality only. Other
manufacturer’s product may be accepted provided they are equal in all
respects to those specified and approved by the Architect.

l) The whole of the work is to be carried out in the most workmanlike

manner, with materials the best procurable of their respective kinds.
m) The whole of the works are to be executed under the superintendence and
control to the entire satisfaction of the Architect.
4.3.3 Excavator
N.B.
As soon as the Contractor is given possession of the site, he must maintain it and take
necessary steps to prevent excessive erosion and denotation of the site and bear the
cost of reinstating same to the levels from his own work commences.
At the time of tendering, it shall be deemed that the Contractor has ascertained the
extent of the excavation and filling required and shall allow for all the necessary
labour, equipment and mechanical plant, etc. to perform the work.
a) Maintain carefully all benchmarks, monuments and other reference points;

if disturbed or destroyed to replace as directed.
b) The Contractor shall carry out all excavation in whatever materials that
may be found except for rocks and shall deposit all excavated materials so
that it will cause as little damage and inconvenience as possible.
c) All excavations shall be carried out to the required breadths, depths,

inclinations and curvatures as may be necessary for the proper construction of
the works or as shown on the drawings. All excavations shall be sufficient to
provide for the necessary working space, shuttering and any other temporary
structure required during construction.
d) Unless otherwise stated, the excavation, whether in open cut or in trench,

shall proceed within such portions at a time as the Architect/S.O. may direct
and shall not in the first instance be carried down to a depth nearer than
150mm above formation level; the last 150mm of depth to formation level
shall be carried out by manual labour immediately in advance of placing
concrete screed, concrete or pipe-laying. The bottoms of all excavation shall
be carefully trimmed and levelled, well rammed and consolidated to ensure
good solid foundations. The Contractor shall take such steps necessary to
prevent damage to the formation due to exposure to the weather.
e) In the event of any excavation including rock excavation being carried out
beyond the limits on or against which permanent work is to be supported in
accordance with the Drawings, unless otherwise directed or authorized by the
Architect/S.O., the Contractor shall at his own expense be required to fill the
excess excavation with Grade 1:3:6 concrete or suitable materials as directed
by and to the satisfaction of the Architect/S.O.

f) All cutting, filling, backfilling and grading are required to bring entire
project area to the formation subgrade allowing for the construction of the
surfacing and at fixed by their `finished grade’. All surplus excavated
materials are to be removed from the site to a dump to be provided by the
Contractor.
g) Any areas where settlement occurs are to be filled to the required

subgrade.
h) The Contractor shall report to the Architect/S.O. when the excavations are
ready to receive concrete and no concrete shall be laid until after the
excavations have been inspected and approved by the Architect/S.O. Any
excavations dug too deep shall made up in grade 1 : 3 : 6 concrete at the
Contractor’s expense.
i) The Contractor shall be responsible for the stability of the excavation at all
times.
j) Provide all necessary temporary shoring, sheeting, planking and strutting,

etc. to secure and maintain the sides of excavations until, in the opinion of the
Architect/S.O. the construction work is sufficiently advanced to permit the
timbering to be withdrawn. Timbering shall be removed only under the
personal supervision of a competent foreman. All timbering are to be
removed before filling in the excavations. Such removal shall be at the
Contractor’s own risk and he shall make good at his own expense any
consequential damages to the works.
k) The Contractor shall be responsible for any injury to the works of

consequential damages caused by or arising out of the removal of timbering,
and any advice, permission or approval given by the Architect/S.O. relating
to the removal of responsibility under the Contract.
l) The Contractor shall be responsible for keeping dry all excavations,

whether in open cut or in trench, so as not interfere with the work in progress.
He shall without claim for extra payment, provide, form, fix, maintain and
work as and where directed by the Architect/S.O. such pumps, well drains,
dams and other things necessary to effectively deal with all water which may
collect, or find its way into the excavations from any cause whatsoever.
Nevertheless, all methods employed for dealing with water shall be to the
approval of the Architect/S.O. Such approval shall not relieve the Contractor
from his liability for any damages to the works or adjoining land and property
or watercourses due to his operations.
m) The earth used for backfilling shall be selected hard and dry material
arising from the excavations or imported from the Contractor’s source. No
back-filling shall commence until the concrete foundation has been inspected
and passed by the Architect/S.O. Any works built upon foundations which
have not been approved by the Architect/S.O. shall on the order of the
Architect/S.O. be uncovered or removed by the Contractor and the
foundations reinstated all at the Contractor’s own expense. All excavated
materials where deposited and spread and levelled on site shall be
consolidated in 150mm layers to the Architect/S.O.’s satisfaction.

n) When removing surplus spoil, the Contractor shall, with dispatch, clear up
all carriageways, footways, wages affected by his work, and leave the site of
the works clean and tidy. If surplus spoil is tipped into or removed from
private property, the operations hall be executed with the approval of, and the
least possible amount of inconvenience to the owner and occupier of the
same.
o) The Contractor shall have no rights of ownership to the surplus material

excavated.
p) Hardcore shall consist of clean, hard, broken bricks, concrete, stone or

other approved inert material of 75mm x 50mm gauge. It shall be deposited
in layer not exceeding 150mm, well rammed and consolidated, with the top
surface watered and blinded with sand. The thickness stated shall be the
finished thickness after being consolidated.
q) The approved hardcore material shall be uniformly positioned in layers to

make up to the required level. The interstices in each layer shall be filled and
blinded with sand and well watered and rammed.
4.4.4 CONCRETOR
No approval or acceptance by the Architect shall relieve the Contractor of his

responsibility under the Contract for the quality of materials and standard of
workmanship in the works.
(A) Materials
General
a) Concrete shall be made with cement, aggregate and water. No other

ingredients shall be used without approval.
b) Whenever possible, the proposed sources of supply should be

accompanied by a test certificate or similar evidence from the supplier
showing that the material complies with the specified requirements.
c) All materials used in the works shall comply in all respects with the
current issue of the relevant British Standard, except for any deviations
specifically authorized in subsequent clauses of this specification.
Cement
a) The cement shall be Portland cement complying with B.S. 12 or Portland

blast furnace cement complying with B.S. 146.
b) All cement shall be delivered to the site in bulk cement lorries of approved
design or in sealed bags.

Aggregates
a) Aggregates shall comply with the recommendation of B.S. 882. In special

circumstances a deviation from B.S. 882 in respect of grading or aggregate
may be accepted, subject to the prior approval of the Architect.
b) The Contractor shall obtain an undertaking from the suppliers of both fine
and coarse aggregates of the quality and type selected that sufficient supplies
are available to complete the Contract.
c) Aggregates shall not contain hollow shells, or shells of unsuitable shape, in

quantities which may adversely affect the quality of or cause permeability in
the concrete.
Water
a) Water shall be clean and free from harmful matter. If water for the works is
not available from a Public Utility Undertaking Supply, approval shall be
obtained regarding the source of supply and manner of its use. When so
directed, the Contractor shall arrange for water tests to be carried out in
accordance with B.S. 3148.
Ready-Mixed Concrete
a) Ready-mixed concrete may be used, subject to approval. It shall be

produced at an approved depot. The concrete shall comply with B.S. 5328,
except where stated in relevant clause of this section and the specifications.
b) All delivery notes shall be retained by the Contractor and made available
for inspection throughout the duration of the Contract. The Contractor shall
also send a copy to the Architect for his record.
c) If at any time the Architect is not satisfied that the ready-mixed concrete
complies with this Specifications, he may alter the frequency of the sampling.
d) All the constituents for each mix shall be added at the manufacturer’s
depot. No extra water or other materials shall be added after the concrete has
left the depot.
Salts
a) The total amount of soluble salts in the concrete from the aggregate, water
and any admixtures shall not exceed the recommend values in clause 6.3.8 of
C.P. 110.

(B) Storage of Materials
a) All materials shall be stored in a manner, which is not detrimental to their

use in the works.
b) Where materials are to be stored on suspended floors or roofs, the

Contractor shall ensure that such storage will not overload or distort the
structural frame.
c) Cement shall be used in the order that it is received on site.
d) All cements shall be stored in a weatherproof shed of adequate size having

a raised dry floor, or in silos of approved design.
e) Aggregates shall be stored on hard paved self-draining areas or in

approved hoppers or containers.
f) Different aggregates shall be kept separately.
g) All material, which are unidentifiable or do not comply with this

Specification shall be removed from the site immediately at the Contractor’s
expense.
(C) Reinforcement
General
The Contractor is entirely responsible for the supply of steel conforming to

this Specification. Reinforcement, which does not comply, shall be rejected
and the Contractor will be responsible for all delays and costs incurred.
Types of Reinforcement
The following types of reinforcement shall be used in the works: -
Hot Rolled Mild Steel bars with a characteristic strength of 250 N/mm square and complying
with B.S. 4449 or B.S. 4757
Storage
Reinforcement shall be stored clear of the ground. Steel fabric shall be

delivered and stored in flat sheets. The Contractor shall maintain on site a
stockpile of stock lengths of reinforcement and suitable cutting and bending
equipment in order to minimize delays which could arise due to incorrect
reinforcement deliveries.

Identification
All reinforcement on site shall be readily identifiable as to its grade and origin.
Test Certificates
The Contractor shall supply to the Architect copies of all manufacturers’ test
certificates for all bathes of steel delivered to site. Steel that does not have
these certificates shall be rejected. The certificates shall show the results of
all the tests necessary to prove the reinforcement complies in all respects with
the relevant British Standard. They shall include the rebend test and shall be
accompanied by details of the manufacturer’s identification marks rolled into
each brand of bar supplied.
Bending, Fixing and Placing
a) Cleaning
All reinforcement shall be freed of all loose mill scale and thoroughly
cleaned to remove all loose rust, oil, grease or other harmful matter,
immediately prior to being placed in position in the works.
b) Bending
All reinforcement shall be cut and bent in accordance with B.S. 4666. All
high tensile bars shall be cut and bent in accordance with the requirements for
grade 460/425 in the standard. Bars shall not be bent or straightened in a
manner that will damage them and all reinforcement shall be bent cold.
c) Placing
All reinforcement shall be fixed in position in accordance with Clause 7.3 of

C.P. 110. All reinforcement shall accurately placed, securely fixed and
adequately maintained in the positions shown on the drawings.
The concrete cover to the reinforcement detailed on the drawings shall be

maintained by use of mortar blocks, reinforcement chairs, or other approved
methods. Mortar blocks used for this purpose shall be made with 1:2 mortar
measuring 2” x 2” and true to thickness equivalent to the concrete cover to
reinforcement as specified.
The use of mortar blocks is not permissible on exposed concrete faces. The
Contractor shall supply and fix all necessary chairs required to maintain the
reinforcement in the correct position. The spacing of chairs and the diameter
of bars used in their manufacturing shall be with the Architect’s approval.
The weight of mild steel used for chairs shall be allowed for in the rates for
reinforcement.
HL/7
All laps of fabric and all intersections of bars shall be securely connected
with malleable iron wire of suitable size or by another approved method.
No metal part of any device used for connecting bars or for maintaining
reinforcement in the correct position shall remain permanently within the
specified minimum concrete cover to the reinforcement. The concrete cover
to reinforcement shall be as indicated in the drawings.
d) Welding
Welding of steel reinforcement is not required. Welding of reinforcement

shall be carried out without the written permission of the Architect. Welding
of cold-worked high tensile strength reinforcement will not be permitted.
e) Projecting Reinforcing
Projecting reinforcement or dowel bars for future connection of the structural

works shall be protected by cement paints, if they are to be left exposed for a
long time.
f) Rust Staining
Concrete surfaces which shall be exposed to view in the finished works shall
be protected from staining due to rusting of projecting reinforcement either
by coating the reinforcement with cement grout or by another approved
method.
(D) Concrete Formwork
a) Formwork panels shall be stiff enough to prevent damage to the concrete

surface caused by excessive movement of the panel during vibration of the
concrete and also due to construction traffic and loads.
b) Damaged formwork shall not be reused if in the opinion of the Architect

the making good would impair the surface appearance of the concrete.
c) All joints in formwork and joints between the formwork shall be

sufficiently tight to prevent loss of liquid from the concrete through these
joints.
d) Immediately before the concrete is placed in any sections of the

formworks, the interior of the section shall be completely cleared of all
extraneous materials.
e) Each section of the formwork to the structural members shall be inspected

and passed by the Architect’s representative before concrete is placed in that
section.
HL/8
Formwork
i) Formwork Props
a) If formwork props are to be left in place when soffit forms are

removed, they shall not be disturbed during the removal process.
b) Formwork props shall be positioned between permanent supports

so that all members are supported at no more than 3 meter centers in
both directions.
ii) Stability of Formwork
a) The vertical propping to all formwork shall be carried down

sufficiently far to provide the necessary support without damage,
overstress or displacement of any part of the construction. The
Contractor is to make allowance for propping through two (2) or
more floors to support the construction loads.
b) The Contractor is deemed to have made a thorough study of all the

drawings at the tender stage, to verify the existence of any part of the
structure, which may require heavy propping. Any extra cost incurred
for such heavy propping will be considered to have been included in
the rate for the formwork.
. c) Structural props shall be retained in position until new

construction is sufficiently strong to support its own weight and any
loads to be placed on it during the contract period. In the event that
re-propping of the newly constructed structure is required to support
the weight of the formwork and the wet concrete of the floor above,
the re-propping shall be done to the satisfaction of the Architect.
d) All props shall be in the form of space frames, composite or single

members with sufficient stiffness or bracing so that the props will not
sway or buckle under loads which they are designed to carry.
e) All formwork to soffits shall be constructed so that it can be

removed without disturbing the structural props.
iii) Striking of Formwork
a) Before any formwork is removed the contractor shall ensure that

the concrete has attained sufficient strength for striking to proceed.
b) The structure shall not be distorted, damage or overloaded in

anyway by the removal of the formwork.
c) The responsibility for the safe removal of any part of the formwork
or props rest with the Contractor.
HL/9
(E) Concreting
i) Final Preparation and Inspection
Before concreting is done, the Contractor shall give notice as directed so that
an inspection may be made before the concrete is placed.
ii) Mixing
Mixing shall be in accordance with Clause 6.7.4 and 6.7.5 of C.P. 110. The
volume of mixed materials in each batch shall comply with the mixer
manufacturers written recommendations.
Concrete shall be mixed in an approved mechanical batch type concrete

mixer. Mixing shall be continued until there is a uniform distribution of the
materials in the mixer and the mass is uniform in colour. The mixing time for
each batch shall not be less than the minimum period recommended by the
mixer manufacturer.
iii) Transporting
Transporting shall be in accordance with Clause 6.11.4 of C.P.110.

Runs or gangways for concrete transporters and main runs for foot traffic
shall not be supported allowed to bear on the fixed reinforcement.
Concrete shall be transported as quickly as possible from the mixer to its final
position without segregation or loss of any of the ingredients.
All plant and equipment used for transporting concrete shall be kept clean; all
containers used for transporting concrete shall be thoroughly washed out
whenever mixing ceases.
iv) Placing
Placing shall be in accordance with Clause 6.11.4 and 7.3 of C.P. 110.
Concrete shall be placed continuously up to construction joints while, in the
opinion of the Architect, it is still sufficiently plastic for adequate
compaction.
At all times when reinforced concrete is being placed, a competent steel fixer
shall be in continuous attendance. He shall adjust and correct the position of
any reinforcement that may be displaced.
The Contractor shall keep on site a complete record of the works showing the
time and date when the concrete is placed in each part of the works.This
record shall be available at all times for inspection by the Architect.
HL/10
v) Compacting
Concrete shall be thoroughly compacted during placing and shall be carefully

worked around all reinforcement and embedded fixtures and into the sides
and corners of the formwork.
Unless otherwise specified all structural concrete shall be compacted by the

use of suitable mechanical vibrators. Wherever possible internal vibrators
shall be used. Thin slabs shall be vibrated by pan type vibrators.
Whenever concrete is being vibrated, at least one spare vibrator of each type
used shall be made available in case of a breakdown.
Compaction shall start as soon as there is sufficient concrete within the

formwork to immerse the vibrator and vibration shall continue during the
placing operation so that at no time shall there be a large volume of
uncompacted concrete in the formwork.
vi) Placing for Formed Finishes
The concrete shall be placed in one continuous operation rising uniformly in

the formwork at a rate not less than 2m per hour. The concrete shall not be
placed directly against a vertical form face but shall be made to flow to this
surface during the compaction process. Care shall be taken to avoid the form
face being splashed with mortar during the placing operation.
vii) Curing
Curing shall be in accordance with Clause 6:11:6:2 of C.P.10. Unless

otherwise specified the Contractor shall obtain approval for his methods of
curing the cast concrete. Liquid curing membrane shall not be used without
prior approval.
(F) Defective Works
Where in the opinion of the Architect, any of the finished works or materials
or workmanship in any part of the works fail to comply with this
Specification, that part of the works will not be accepted and may be classed
as defective.
All works classed as defective shall be cut out and removed from the works
and replaced or otherwise dealt within the approved manner. The Contractor
shall be responsible for any consequential costs or delays.
HL/11
(G) Bricklayer
The cement shall be as previously described in “Concretor”. The sand for

brickwork shall comply with the requirements of B.S. 1200 and shall be
clean, sharp, freshwater river sand free from clay and any other impurities
and shall be washed and/or screened if required by the Architect/S.O.
Mortar shall be composed of one part of cement and six parts of sand for
work above damp-proof course, with the addition of an approved mortar
plasticiser used strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
The ingredients for mortar shall be measured in proper gauge boxes on a
boarded platform or in an approved mechanical mixer.
The bricks shall be standard size, hard, well burnt machine made wire-cut
clay bricks from an approved kiln strictly to the approval of the
Architect/S.O. Bricks are to be delivered to the site by the suppliers and shall
be staked on arrival by them. Minimum compressive strength for all bricks
shall be 1500 lbs. per sq. inch.
Red facing bricks where specified are to be from an approved source of

texture and colour approved by the Architect/S.O. Only selected and
approved red facing bricks from each load shall be used.
Samples of bricks randomly selected from the load shall be deposited with
and approved by the Architect/S.O. before being used and all subsequent
deliveries shall be up to the standards of the sample approved.
All bricks shall be soaked in water for at least half an hour immediately
before being laid and all constructed brickwork must be cured with water for
five Days and protected from the sun’s rays for two Days after laying. All
bricks are to be carefully stacked on site on arrival.
All brickwork, except half brick walls, shall be in English bond. All shall be
built in level courses, no four courses to rise more than 25mm in addition to
the height of the bricks laid dry. Bats are to be used only when required for
bonding purpose. No portion to exceed 1.52M above adjoining parts whilst
being built and all working junctions to be racked back and not toothed up.
All joints of brickwork to receive plaster or rendering shall be raked out to a

depth of 12mm as the work proceeds. Brickwork shall be prevented from
drying out for at least 48 hours, after it is constructed, by covering or other
means.
All fair face and faced brickwork shall be kept clean with adequate
precautionary measures; rubbing or staining will not be permitted.
Scaffolding boards shall be turned back during heavy rain and at night to
ensure this.
HL/12
Perform all necessary rough and fair cutting. Form all openings and build in
lintol's, D.P.C’s; hangars, cramps and lugs. Form rough arch turned over all
drainpipes. Facing and fair-faced brickwork shall be pointed with a neat joint
to an approved sample built by the Contractor. Walls to render shall have
joints roughly raked for key.
Provide course reinforcement for all half brick walls at every fourth course.
The course reinforcement shall be 80mm wide x 22 gauge approved
expended metal laid with laps etc., complying with the recommendations of
the manufacturer.
Provide horizontal damp-proof course to the full width of the brick walls.
The damp-proof course shall be 0.25mm Polyethylene lapped at least 75mm
at angles and joints and shall be laid on 25mm bed of cement mortar (1:1)
and coated with hot bitumen on the upper surface which shall be sprinkled
with coarse sand to form a key.
(H) Pavior
Cement and sand shall be as previously described in “Concretor”. The

ingredients for all pavings shall be accurately gauged in approved boxes and
mixed in a proper watertight-boarded platform.
The water content of the mix must be only the minimum required to give a
workable mix. The paving must be thoroughly rammed within 30 minutes of
laying, and the surface trowelling must be delayed until the paving is
stiffened sufficiently to prevent laitance being brought to the surface by the
trowel. The paving shall be rubbed down, if necessary, to produce a smooth
even surface.
The paving shall be kept damp and free from heavy traffic for a minimum
period of seven Days after laid, by covering with a 25mm layer of wet sand
or gunny sacks.
Where paving is required to be waterproofed, an approved additive shall be

used, strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
All tiling work to be executed by Specialists approved by Architect/S.O.

Before any tiling or paving is commended the Contractor is to submit for the
Architect/S.O.’s approval the names of the Specialist Sub-Contractor firms
the Contractor propose to employ.
HL/13
(I) Carpenter
All timber for Carpenter’s work, except where specifically otherwise stated
shall be in accordance with the following schedules: -
Grade “A” - Merbau, Chengal, Balau, Resak, etc.,
Grade “B” - Kapor, Kempas, Keruing, Kulim, etc.,
Grade “C” - Dark Red Meranti, Nyatoh, Merawan,

Mersawa, Melunak, Medang, Mengkulang, etc.,
The various grades as stated shall by no means be limited but are only guides.
The Architect shall select other equal and approved grades of timber if
necessary. Provided all timber of best quality, perfectly dry and well
seasoned, sawn die square, free from sap, shakes, waney edges, large, loose
or dead knots and all other defects and to the approval of the Architect/S.O.
All timber shall be “pressure-treated” impregnated under vacuum and

pressure with and approved proprietary wood preservative to the following
nett dry salt retention: -

The Contractor shall produce a certificate from the supplier that the timber
has been pressure-treated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
and showing the quantities and sizes of timber treated and the nett retention
of dry salt obtained.
Seal ends of pressure-treated timber, which are cut with proprietary sealer
applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The sizes of sawn
timber, except where otherwise specified, shall be within the margin of
permissible variation stated hereunder: -
i) For widths, depths or thickness not exceeding 75mm within 3mm

of the specified size.
ii) Find widths, depths or thickness exceeding 75mm within 6mm of

the specified size.
The Contractor shall provide at his own cost any necessary block, wedges or
battens to compensate for irregular surfaces caused by any variation in size of
timber hereby permitted.
HL/14
All carpenters’ work shall be left with a sawn surface except where visible
shall be wrought. Provide all carpenters’ work of the required timber grading.
The Contractor must deliver the whole of the timber on the site within one
Month of the possession of the site.
Store all timber under a shed properly stockade and stacked to enable air to
circulate freely around all faces. All joints shall be properly framed and
securely spike. Longitudinal joints in plates etc., shall be formed over
supports and shall lap at least 150mm or twice the depth of the timber,
whichever is the greater.
All nails, screws, spikes, bolts, plates, etc., are to be of the best quality and of
the weights and lengths suitable for the purpose required where not shown.
Various proprietary fixings are available for particular or specialized jobs.
These shall only be used where appropriate in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions and to approval when not specifically detailed.
Where holes are required for fixings, their formation in metal or synthetic
materials shall be by drilling and in brick, stone or concrete shall be by
percussion method i.e. jumper and hammer.
Where cartridge operated hand tools are used such as “Ramset” or similar
approved, performed holes are not required. They must not be used on
ceramic tiles, hollow block, cast iron and other brittle materials, lath and
plaster, fibreboard and similar soft materials.
Fixing of timber to concrete or brickwork shall be by:
a) Hardened steel pins direct into concrete or brickwork for fixing

small sections such as skirting and architrave. The head shall be
punched home and filled.
b) Performed plugs such as “Rawlplug” or similar approved in

formed holes.
c) Plastic compound such as “Philplug Fixrite” or similar approved in

formed holes.
d) Expending bolts such as “Rawlbolt”, or similar approved.
e) Cartridge operated hand tools such as “Ramset” or similar

approved but shall not be used within 2 inches of any edge.
Care must be taken to locate any buried cables, or other services when fixing
timber to concrete or brickwork. If any hole hits reinforcement it must be
repositioned.
Fixing of timber to metal shall be by: -
a) Self-tapping screws in thin sheet.

b) Bolts in performed holes (tapped as required)
c) Cartridge operated hand tools.
HL/15
Boards and linings, other than tongued, grooved, and less than 175mm wide
on face, shall be secured with 2 nails at each fixing position of joist. The nails
shall be neither less than 12mm nor more than 20mm from edges. Boards and
linings other than tongued and grooved, and more than 175mm wide on face,
shall be secured with 3 nails at each fixing position or joist. The other nails
shall be neither less than 12mm nor more than 20mm from edge.
Tongued and grooved boards and linings less than 100mm wide on face shall
be secured with one nail at each fixing positions or joist. Tongued and
grooved boards and linings more than 100mm wide on face shall be secured
with 2 nails at each fixing position or joist.
All nails shall have a length of not less than: -
a. Plain boards and lining, 2 - ½ x thickness.
b. Tongued and grooved boards and linings, 2 x thickness.
All boards and linings shall be secured with hammer driven nails unless
specified to be fixed with screws. When screws are specified they shall be not
less than No. 8 and not shorter than 2 x thickness.
Wall plates shall be fixed to concrete with 10mm diameter mild steel dowels
450mm girth at 1.82M centers.
(J) Steel and Ironworker
Mild steel shall comply with the requirements of B.S. 15. All materials shall
be in accordance with B.S. 449 “The use of Structure Steel in Building” and
B.S. 1856 “General Requirements for the Metal Arc Welding of Mild Steel”.
All smiting and bending to be soundly and neatly executed in a workmanlike

manner care being taken not to overheat the metal. All straps, bolts and
similar work shall be forged net and clean from the anvil, nuts, bolt and
screws to be cut with a full thread.
All ironwork other than galvanized, black coated or “shop primed” to be

delivered to the site unpainted. Immediately before fixing they are to be
cleaned entirely free from scale or rust by wire brushing. Immediately after
fixing they are to be given one full coat of priming paint. Manufactured
articles received already primed to be wire brushed and touch up with
priming paint as necessary.
Items specified as galvanized to be completely hot dipped in a zinc bath after

manufacture. Excess zinc to be removed and the surface finish smooth and
uniform.
HL/16
Supply all incidental metalwork as indicated on the drawings; galvanized ties

and cramps for building in, all nails, screws, bolts and etc. of a size and
quality adequate for their purpose.
Supply and fix all rolled steel sections as indicated on the drawings to
conform to B.S. 4. Supply all framed work e.g. gratings, railings, grilles,
balustrades etc., as may be indicated on the drawings. Unless indicated
otherwise all joints to be neatly and inconspicuously welded.
All surfaces to be welded shall free of rust and dirt. Weld in accordance with
B.S. 1856. Only employ skilled welders who have previously taken selected
tests as described in B.S. 2645. Site welding will only be allowed with prior
approval in writing from the Architect/S.O. During erection, provide
adequate temporary fastening of the members together, and bracing of the
structure until the joints are welded. Such means shall impart sufficient
strength and stiffness to the structure to resist all temporary weights and
lateral loads including wind load. All fillet welds shall be continuous. Size of
welds to be 6mm.
Mark all holes accurately from templates or corresponding plates, and drill.
Plates half inch thick or less may be punched. Clean holes of all burrs or
rough edges and counter sink where required. Drifting is not permitted. The
diameter of all holes must exceed the diameter of the bolt or rivet by not
more than 1.5mm. Holes of screw etc., shall be countersunk, and all counter
sinking shall be concentric.
For steelwork only use bolts and nuts of the best quality whitworth threads.
They shall have hexagonal heads and nuts with round shanks unless
otherwise specified and be furnished with circular washers of an outside
diameter equal to 2 - ½ times the diameter of the bolt. Use tapered washers
for flanges of joints at similar positions. Bolts should be of such a length as to
project not less than 3mm or more than 12mm beyond the nut when tightened
up. All bolts to be tightened “dead tight”. All bolts nuts and washers must be
dipped in a protective fluid (Shell Ensis Fluid, Ref. 260 or equivalent).
The works must at all times be open to the Architect/S.O. and any material or
workmanship not entirely to his satisfaction shall be open to rejection and
shall be replaced at the Contractor’s own expense. Inform the Architect/S.O.
on the completion of the work at the site so that an inspection can be carried
out prior to delivery.
When lifting steelwork into position care should be taken that the parts are
not strained, twisted, bent or damaged in any manner at all. Should any part
be strained, twisted, bent, or damaged, reinstate it in a manner as directed by
the Architect/S.O. by gently heating and bending and not by hammering.
Any parts badly damaged in the opinion of the Architect/S.O. shall be
replaced with new material at the Contractor’s expense.
HL/17
Proper and suitable slings, lifting appliances and blocking must be provided.
The lifting of the steelwork in bundles, which in the opinion of the
Architect/S.O. is liable to cause damage or strain, will not be permitted. The
stacking of materials prior to erection or during erection in a manner or in
such a position as may, in the opinion of the Architect/S.O. cause damage to
the material so stacked or the permanent works will not be permitted.
All steelwork shall be properly cleaned of all loose scale, rust, grease, slag
and other deleterious materials prior to painting. When properly cleaned all
steelwork shall receive one coat of first quality red lead paint in the workshop
prior to assembly.
The Contractor shall furnish at his own expenses all necessary tools, hoist
staging and materials of any description necessary for the safe and proper
erection, and shall remove the same after erection is completed.
(K) Painting
a) Plaster concrete surfaces etc. (New)
Surfaces shall be allowed to dry out completely. Any efflorescence shall be

removed by wiping first with a dry course cloth and then with a damp cloth.
The surfaces shall be left for forty-eight hours to see if further efflorescence
has ceased.
b) Preparation of surface for Snowcem
All surfaces must be free from dust, dirt, fungus, lichen, algae and etc. Loose
materials and dirt must be removed by brushing and when necessary by
washing. Grease, oil paint, varnish, all types of distemper, lime-wash and
etc., must be completely removed. The surfaces shall then receive to coats
Snowcem and one coat of “Oriwal”.
c) Preparation of surface for Emulsion Paint
If the existing emulsion paint work is in good condition and firmly adhering,
the surfaces shall be cleaned down. It shall be ensured that any remaining,
apparently sound materials is firmly adhering. Cracks and imperfection shall
be rectified and made good using Keene’s cement or similar hard plaster or a
sand/cement mixture as appropriate. All making good shall be allowed to dry
out completely.
Prepare and apply one coat I.C.I. anti-alkaline primer sealer to all new
internal plastered surface and other patched up works to existing plastering
and generally two coats I.C.I Emulsion paint to the whole internal plastered
surfaces and softboard ceiling, both new and existing. For new ceiling, walls
and etc., provide one extra of emulsion paint.
HL/18
d) Iron and Steel (New)
Surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned down to remove all dirt, grease, etc.,
and thoroughly chipped, scraped and wire brushed to remove all rust and
loose scales back to clean metal.
The surfaces shall then be primed immediately with one coat or red lead
metal primer No. 1 A. 500-561 or coat grey-green chromate metal primer.
e) The woodwork shall be cleaned to remove dirt, grease and etc. rubbed
down or scarped smooth and dusted off. A thin coat of best patent knotting
shall be applied to all knots and allow to harden. The surface shall then be
primed with aluminium primer A. 519 - 3697 and painted with one
undercoat.
When the primer is hard, all cracks, nail holes, open joints and other
imperfection shall be made good with hard stopping or linseed oil putty.
f) Generally on the prepared surfaces described above, for both steel and
woods, prepare and paint up one undercoat and one finished coat.
g) All various kinds of primer, paints and distemper paints supplied shall be
delivered to the site in the maker’s sealed containers and must be thoroughly
mixed or stirred before use all in accordance with the manufacturer’s any
kind.
h) All existing paint on woodwork, plaster, precast concrete work, brickwork

iron steel and galvanized iron work and etc, whether it is in good condition or
otherwise is to be decided and directed by the Landscape Architect and not
by the Contractor. The Contractor shall allow in his tender to comply with the
Landscape Architect’s direction in this connection.
i) The Contractor shall report to the Landscape Architect when the surfaces
are ready to receive painting. On no account shall painting be commenced
until the prepared surfaces have been inspected and passed by the Landscape
Architect of his representative.
