COMPILATION
OF THE
DIFFERENT KINDS OF
TOOLS IN
SMAW
(Shielded Metal Arc
Welding)
MEASURING TOOLS

FRAMING SQUARE - Consisting of a long blade and shorter,

narrower tongue, this L-shaped square comes in handy when
marking up wide boards and sheet stock or checking their
squareness. It's also good for laying out rafters and stair stringers.
Use for checking the correctness of right angles, as a guide when
drawing lines on materials before cutting, or for locating holes.
 COMBINATION SQUARE- is a multi-use measuring instrument
which is primarily used for ensuring the integrity of a 90° angle,
measuring a 45° angle, measuring the center of a circular object, find
depth, and simple distance measurements. It can also be used to
determine level and plumb using its spirit level vial.

 TORPEDO LEVEL- type of spirit level that is an essential tool for

any professional working in tight spaces. The body of the level is
made of either metal or plastic and contains two or three tube
vials. These tubes, or vials, contain yellowish-green additives and
are used to determine the surface level.
 ST
EE
L

TAPE - are not flexible and are suitable for measuring levelled
surfaces only. They
may corrode
easily when
exposed to moisture and
to prevent this tape, it
should be cleaned and
oiled after every use.
These tapes are
generally used for
standardizing
chains,

measurements of construction work.

PULL
PUSH

RULER - is a measuring tape that coils into a compact case. It is

used for measuring long, short, straight lengths.

 CALIPER- is a type of measuring tool that measures the distance

between two opposite sides of an object. Calipers can measure

thicknesses, distances and internal and external diameters. As a
result, they're an essential tool for auto repair, woodworking and
metalworking.

CUTTING TOOLS
 HACKSAW- type of hand tool designed specifically for
cutting through materials such as plastic, steel, and other
metals. They are a variant of the traditional hand saw,
typically used for cutting wood, and have become a staple
tool for professionals and hobbyists alike.

 CROSSCUT SAW- (thwart saw) is any saw designed for cutting

wood perpendicular to (across) the wood grain. Crosscut saws may
be small or large, with small teeth close together for fine work like
woodworking or large for coarse work like log bucking, and can be a
hand tool or power tool.
 BACK SAW- any hand saw which has a stiffening rib on the edge
opposite the cutting edge, enabling better control and more precise
cutting than with other types of saws. Backsaws are normally used in
woodworking for precise work, such as cutting dovetails, mitres, or

tenons in cabinetry and joinery.

 COPING SAW - is a type of bow saw used to cut intricate external

shapes and interior cut-outs in woodworking or carpentry. It is widely
used to cut moldings to create coped rather than mitre joints.
 DRILLERS - A power tool that uses a rotating drill bit. It is
used to create holes in various materials, such as wood,
metal, and plastic.
- Cylindrical end-cutting tool used to originate or
enlarge circular holes in solid material.
 REAMER- Rotary cutting tool of cylindrical or conical
shape used for enlarging and finishing to accurate
dimensions holes that have been drilled, bored, or cored. A
reamer cannot be used to originate a hole.
- is used to widen the size of a pre-existing
hole in metal by a small amount to leave smooth
sides – removing any burrs or rough edges. It's a
pointed round file with a tip that's typically coated in
diamond dust to create a hard, durable surface that's
great for filing.

HAND TOOLS

 ELECTRODE HOLDER- equipment that holds an electrode in

a position that is secure and safe during welding. It is also
known as a stinger in the welding language. There are

different sizes of electrode holders which are made in

various designs by the different manufacturer.

 WELDING ROD - used to sustain the welding arc and to

provide the filler metal required for the joint to be

welded. The coating protects the metal from damage,
stabilizes the arc, and improves the weld.
 GROUND CLAMP - "ground lead" are common terms
used by many welders. The workpiece is connected to a
welding cable typically by means of a spring loaded clamp
or screw clamp.

 WELDING PLIERS - A
single tool designed for
six functions
which include
nozzle and tip
installation, wire cutting,
nozzle cleaning, slag hammer and spatter removal. The
welding pliers are drop forged steel constructed and come
with a form fitting handle.
 WIRE BRUSH - are a staple for weld cleaning. They're
versatile and effective tools for removing surface
contamination, such as rust or heat discoloration, without
removing base material.

 CHIPPING HAMMERS - are used to clean and remove slag

from welds (dressing) and can also be used for boiler scaling
applications. The all steel construction makes this hammer
both solid and strong and features a striking head with a
sharp conical point and a flat chisel bevelled end.
 WOOD CHISEL- They are made up of a steel blade attached
either to a wooden or plastic handle. Chisel hammers and
wooden mallets are the tools we use to strike the end of the
handle to allow you to split, chop and pare wood. Chisels are
primarily used for developing woodworking joints and
shaping wood.

 LOCKING PLIERS - effective work-holding clamps. They can

fasten a piece of wood or metal for sawing, drilling, and
grinding, and they can hold two pieces of metal together for
welding.
OTHER TOOLS

 ELECTRODE LEAD CABLE - is your welding lead, which

delivers power to the electrode and attaches to the
electrode holder. In contrast, the work cable connects to
the work clamp, sometimes erroneously referred to as
the ground cable and clamp. These cables form a
complete circuit for the arc-welding system to operate
under.

 CABLE CONNECTOR - allow welders to quickly remove

cables from their welding machine and adjust the cable size
to suit their needs.
- is the component that you attach to
the end of a cable so that it can plug into a port or an
interface of an electronic system.

GRINDER- uses an abrasive product usually a rotating wheel to

shape and finish a workpiece by removing metal and
generating a surface within a given tolerance. A grinding
wheel is made with abrasive grains bonded together. Each
grain acts as a cutting tool, removing tiny chips from the
workpiece.

SPANNER - is a hand-held tool used to provide grip and

tighten or loosen fasteners. It gives a mechanical
advantage in applying torque to turn objects. The tool is
used in turning rotary fasteners like nuts and bolts.
Spanners are made of a metal shaft with a profile opening
on one end.
 WELDING TORCH- is used in
an automatic welding system to
direct the welding electrode
into the arc, to conduct welding power to the electrode, and
to provide shielding of the arc area.

 ANVIL - helps grab the workpiece tightly so the workpiece

can be held firmly still and both the oscillation and the
pressure are applied to the workpiece optimally.
 POWER SUPPLY- to produce sufficient heat to melt the joint
and to generate a stable arc and metal transfer. As the
welding processes require high current (50-300A) at
relatively low voltage (10-50V),the high voltage mains supply
(230 or 400V) must be reduced by a transformer.

 WELDING HELMET - is a form of headgear designed to

protect the head and eyes from sparks. Considering that

most head and eye injuries are caused by sparks and

ultraviolet rays, which generally occurs during welding or
while using a plasma cutting machine, they are worth the
investment.
