Oral administration of small doses of hormones like progesterone and estrogen is
contraceptive method used by the females. They are used in the form of tablets and
hence called the pills. There are three types of oral contraceptive pills: combined estrogen
progesterone, progesterone only and the continuous or extended use pill. Progesterone
is the hormone that prevents pregnancy, and the estrogen component will control menstrual
bleeding. Birth control pills are primarily used to prevent pregnancy but they can be used
to address other health conditions also particularly menstrual related disorders such as
menstrual pain, irregular menstruation, fibroids, endometriosis related pain and menstrual
related migraines. Use of combined pills for acne treatment is also very common.
Most side effects of contraceptive pills are mild and disappear with continued use or
switching to another pill formulation. The most ommon adverse effect of combined oral
constraceptive pills is break through bleeding . Women will also complain of nausea,
headaches, abdominal cramping, increased water retention in the body.

Over population causes number of family problems strategies like birth control methods
help to prevent population explosion. Among the 1.9 billion, women of reproductive age
group (15 - 49 years) worldwide in 2019,1.1billion have a need for family planning of these
842 million are using contraceptive methods and 270 million have an unmet need for
contraception. The proportion of the need for family planning satisfied by modern methods,
Sustainable. Development Goals (SDGs) was 70 -72% globally in 2019, yet less than half
of the need for family planning was met in Western Africa. Only one contraceptive method,
i.e. condoms can prevent both a pregnancy and the transmission of sexually transmitted
infections including HIV. In India, ‘Family planning’ programme was initiated in 1951 at a
national level to attain total reproductive health as a social goal. This programme also
aimed at population control in India And several campaigns were run to bring awareness
among masses in this regard.
