Energetics - Heat of Solution

The document describes an experiment to determine the heat of solution for four salts: MgSO4, K2SO4, KNO3, and NH4NO3. It provides the procedure, results table with mass, volume, and temperature measurements for each salt, calculations to determine the heat of solution in kJ/mol for each salt. The heat of solution values calculated were -84.96 kJ/mol for MgSO4, 26.70 kJ/mol for K2SO4, 35.26 kJ/mol for KNO3, and 26.43 kJ/mol for NH4NO3.

Title: Energetics- Heat of Solution

Aim: To determine the heat of solution for MgSO₄, K2SO4, KNO 𖾔 and NH₄NO₃ by measuring
the temperature change during its dissolution.

Procedure: Perform the virtual lab.

Record your masses and volumes and temperatures for the salts. USE A DIFFERENT MASS
AND VOLUME FOR EACH SALT. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure accurate
answers.

Results:

TABLE SHOWING MASSES, VOLUMES AND TEMPERATURES ATTAINED FOR

THE VARIOUS SALTS UTILIZED

Salt Initial Temperature/℃ Final Mass of Salt/g Volume of Water/ml

Temperature/℃

MgSO₄ 25.00 58.74 10.00 50.00

K2SO4 25.00 21.35 2.50 25.00

KNO 𖾔 25.00 0.00 18.00 60.00

NH₄NO₃ 25.00 5.29 25.00 100.00

Calculations

➢ Energy transferred in MgSO₄ = q = mc△t

➢ = 50.00g × 4.184 J/g℃ × (58.74 - 25.00)℃
➢ = 70,584.408J
➢ = 7.058kJ
➢ Mol of MgSO₄ =
➢ Mol = Mass/Mᵣ
➢ = 10.00g / (24.31+32.07+(16.00 × 4))g/mol
➢ = 0.08307mol

➢ △Heat of solution of MgSO₄ = q/mol

➢ = 7.058kJ/0.08307mol
➢ = -84.96kJ/mol

➢ Energy transferred in K2SO4 = q = mc△t

➢ = 25.00g × 4.184 J/g℃ × (21.35 - 25.00)℃
➢ = -381.79J
➢ = -0.3818kJ

➢ Mol of K2SO4 =
➢ Mol = Mass/Mᵣ
➢ = 2.50g / (32.07 + (39.10 × 2) + (16.00 × 4))g/mol
➢ = 0.0143mol

➢ △Heat of solution of K2SO4 = q/mol

➢ = -0.3818kJ/0.0143mol
➢ = 26.70kJ/mol

➢ Energy transferred in KNO 𖾔 = q = mc△t

➢ = 60.00g × 4.184 J/g℃ × (0.00 - 25.00)℃
➢ = -6276J
➢ = -6.276kJ

➢ Mol of KNO 𖾔 =
➢ Mol = Mass/Mᵣ
➢ = 18.00g / (14.01 + 39.10 + (16.00 × 3))g/mol
➢ = 0.178mol

➢ △Heat of solution of KNO 𖾔 = q/mol

➢ = -6.276kJ/0.178mol
➢ = 35.26kJ/mol
➢ Energy transferred in NH₄NO₃ = q = mc△t
➢ = 100.00g × 4.184 J/g℃ × (5.29 - 25.00)℃
➢ = -8246.664J
➢ = -8.247kJ

➢ Mol of KNO 𖾔 =
➢ Mol = Mass/Mᵣ
➢ = 25.00g / (14.01 + (1.008 × 4) + 14.01 + (16.00 × 3))g/mol
➢ = 0.312mol

➢ △Heat of solution of KNO 𖾔 = q/mol

➢ = -8.247kJ/0.312mol
➢ = 26.43kJ/mol

Conclusion: The heat of solution for MgSO₄, K2SO4, KNO 𖾔 and NH₄NO₃ were calculated to be
-84.96kJ/mol, 26.70kJ/mol, 35.26kJ/mol and 26.43kJ/mol respectively.
