Problem 1
Calculate the total DC resistance of a 100 m roll of 2.5mm2 copper
wire if the resistivity of copper at 20oC is 1.72 x 10-8 Ω m

Solution 1
R = ρ *(L/a)
ρ =1.72 x 10-8 Ω .m
L=100m
a=2.5 mm2 =2.5 *10-3*10-3 =2.5*10-6 m2

R = 1.72 x 10-8*(100/ 2.5 *10-6) =0.68Ω

Problem 2
A 20 meter length of cable has a cross-sectional area of 1mm2 and
a resistance of 5 ohms. Calculate the conductivity (σ) of the cable.

Solution 2
R = ρ *(L/a)
L=20m
a=1 mm2 =1 *10-3*10-3 =1*10-6 m2
R = 5Ω

σ = 20/(5 *1 *10-6) =4*106 (S/m)

Problem 3
A lamp is designed for use 120V and has a current flow of 0.5A .
Determine the DC power consumed.

Solution 3
Power P=V*I=120*0.5=60 W
Problem 4
Six lamps are wired in a circuit. Each lamp has a resistance of
110Ω. The total amperage of the circuit is 4.5A, Determine:

1) the total current drawn by the lamps in series circuit.

2) the total current drawn by the lamps in parallel circuit.
3) the current drawn by one lamp in parallel circuit
4) the total resistance in a series circuit.
5) the total resistance in a parallel circuit
Solution 4
Six lamps are wired in a circuit . Each lamp has a resistance of
110Ω. The total amperage of the circuit is 4.5A, Determine:

1) the total current drawn by the lamps in series circuit = 4.5A.

2) the total current drawn by the lamps in parallel circuit = 4.5A.
3) the current drawn by one lamp in parallel circuit = 4.5/6 =
0.75A.
4) the total resistance in a series circuit = Rtotal= 6*110 = 660 Ω.
5) the total resistance in a parallel circuit = Rtotal = 1/(6*(1/110))
=18.3 Ω.
Problem 5
A 225 KVA transformer located outside a factory is connected to a
7200V ac source. The ratio of primary windings to secondary
windings is 30:1, Determine:

1) Approximate the voltage provided to the factory.

2) What is the current.
Solution 5

a) Approximate the voltage provided to the factory =

Vp=7200 v, Np/Ns=30/1
Vs=Vp / (Np/Ns) = 7200/(30/1) = 240 v.

b) What is the current =

P=V*I
I=P/V = 225*103/240 = 937.5A.
Problem 6
A circuit consumes 3000 kW of real power , when the apparent
power is 3600 KVA. Calculate the power factor PF.

Solution 6
PF= real power/apparent power
= 3000/3600 = 0.83.
Problem 7
In the circuit shown the resistance of each line is 0.5 Ω the load 1
draw 30A the load 2 draw 14A.

Find: Vload(1) and Vload(2)

Solution 7

1) The voltage drop of line 1= R*I = 0.5*30A=15V,

2) The voltage drop of line 2= 0.5*14A=7V,
3) The voltage drop of neutral line = 0.5*(30A-14A)=8V,
4) Apply KVL on load 1:
-120+15 +Vload(1)+8=0
Vload(1)=120-15-8= 97V.

5) Apply KVL on load 2:

-120+7 +Vload(2)+8=0
Vload(2)=120-7-8=105V.
Problem 8
In the circuit shown the resistance of each line is 1 Ω the load 1
draw 10A the load 2 draw 2A.

Find: Vload(1) and Vload(2) in the following cases:

1) Normal Case.
2) The neutral is broken
Solution 8
Case #1
1) The voltage drop of line 1= R*I = 1*10A=10V,
2) The voltage drop of line 2= 1*2A=2V,
3) The voltage drop of neutral line = 1*(10A-2A)=8V,
4) Apply KVL on load 1:
-120+10 +Vload(1)+8=0
Vload(1)=120-10-8= 102V.

5) Apply KVL on load 2:

-120+8 +Vload(2)+8=0
Vload(2)=120-8-8=104V.
Solution 8
Case #2
1) The voltage drop of line 1= voltage drop of line 2 =0V.
Problem 9
An AC circuit is powering an electric heater (i.e., pure resistance,
PF=1.0). Assume the voltage is 240 V and a current draw of 10 A.
Compute the apparent power and real power.

Solution 9
1) apparent power, S= V*I= 240 V*10 A= 2400 W.
2) real power, P= V*I*(PF)= 240 V*10 A*1.0=2400 W.
Problem 10
An AC circuit is powering an electric motor (i.e., inductive load,
PF=0.833). Assume the voltage is 240 V and a current draw of 10
A. Compute the apparent power, real power, and reactive power.

Solution 10
1) apparent power, S= V*I= 240 V*10 A= 2400 VA.
2) real power, P= V*I*(PF)= 240 V*10 A*0.833=1900 W.
3) Reactive power, Q=V*I*Sin (pf) = 240*10*sin (cos-1(0.833))
= 2400* sin (33.6o) = 2400*0.5534 = 1328.14 VAR.
