    ADJECTIVE

    A word used with a noun to describe or point out, the person, animal, place or thing which the noun
    names, or to tell the number or quantity, is called an Adjective. So we may define an Adjective as a word
    used with a noun to add something for its meaning.

    Read the following sentences :-

    1. Sita is a clever girl. (Girl of what kind1?)

    2. I don't like that boy, (Which boy ?)

    3. He gave me five mangoes. (How many mangoes?)

    4. There is little time for preparation. (How much time ?)

    In sentence 1, ‘clever’ shows what kind of girl Sita is; or, in other words, ‘clever’ describes the girl Sita.

    In sentence 2, ‘that’ points out which boy is meant.

    In sentence 3, ‘five’ shows how many mangoes he gave me.

    In sentence 4, ‘little’ shows how much time there is for preparation.

    KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
     POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES : The most commonly used possessive adjectives are my,
    your, his, her, its, our, their, and whose. In order, these adjectives correspond to the
    pronouns I, you, he, she, it, we, they, and who. As their name suggests, possessive
    adjectives are often used to express possession or ownership.
    FOR EX : The kids are mine.
    The money was really theirs for the taking.
    We shall have what is rightfully ours .

     PROPER ADJECTIVES : A proper adjective is a modifier that is formed from a proper


    noun. Like adjectives, proper adjectives modify nouns and pronouns.

    FOR EX : proper noun: America


     I live in America.
    proper adjective: American
     The Fourth of July is an American holiday.
    proper noun: Italy
     I was born in Italy.
    proper adjective: Italian
     I love Italian food.

     DISTRIBUTIVE ADJECTIVES : A distributive adjective is a describing word that


    refers to separate things.

    Distributive adjectives such as, “each,” “every,” “either,” “neither,” and


    “any,” are describing words that refer to specific things out of a group.

    FOR EX : Five members were seated on each chair.

    I go to the movies every week.

    Either path will get us out of the woods.


    Neither answer sounded right.
    Both cats chased the mouse.
    Any member of the club can come to the party.

     INTERROGATIVE ADJECTIVES : An interrogative adjective is an adjective that


    modifies a noun or pronoun in order to ask a question.
    For example,
     Which color is your favorite?
     whose money is this ?
     what is the matter?
