Final Reflection
I have studied Spanish off and on since 2006. When learning a new language, grammar
and syntax play an important role in communicating with others, whether it be verbally, written,
or orally. This course helped to refine some of my understanding of Spanish grammar and
syntax, strengthening my skills in the language through lessons in class and activities in our
textbook, Mundos en palabras. That practice, combined with my previous coursework over the
years, greatly assisted me when it came to developing translations and interpreting strategies to

I am a Spanish major at ODU, yet I do not possess any background in the discipline
other than previous coursework at the university or at the high school and middle school levels. I
encountered an overwhelmingly large number of Spanish speaking students and families that
did not speak English. To better educate them, I refreshed my Spanish and relied on Google

spoken language in the United States. There is significant value in understanding the
complexities of the language. Throughout the course, I had some struggles with understanding
some of the grammatical content. For example, the use of passive and active voice. I was able
to overcome these struggles through use of the textbook activities, in class lessons, and
interacting with my fellow classmates. I have also been able to greatly build my oral proficiency
in Spanish which is evidenced by my final video for the course on the same subject of passive
