The Learning Environment, Classroom

Unit 1: Routines, and Preparation of

Instructional Materials

Episode 1:

The Learning Environment

At the end of this learning episode, the FS student must have:

• Revisited the concept of learning environment in the context
of the current teaching and learning situation;
• Assisted the preparation of traditional face-to-face learning
environment; and
• Explored the different ways to establish a conducive on-line
Learning Outcomes or virtual learning environment.
• Participated in various activities in the remote or modular
learning.

A learning environment, traditionally called the

classroom is a space in the school that supports student
learning. It is a self-contained area where teacher teaches
and children learn. In the classroom are chairs or tables
for students and a front table for the teacher. This is a
traditional face-to-face classroom.

In a face-to-face classroom, students and the teacher are physically

present. They meet at a time set in the classroom. The teacher prepares activities,
provides instruction and evaluates students’ learning. Equipment and instructional
materials are made available in the classroom where teaching and learning take
place most of the time.

A modular distance learning involves individualized instruction self-learning that

allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital
format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable in the context of the learner. The

1
teacher takes the responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners,
likewise, they may do home visits to learners needing remediation or assistance.
Any member of the family or other stakeholders may serve as para-teachers.
The on-line learning environment requires a constant access to connectivity
which allows learning to take place anytime, anyplace, and anywhere. On-line or
virtual learning can be delivered synchronously or asynchronously, so the teacher’s
role is a moderator between the technology and the students.

Note: In assisting your resource teacher in an on-line class, there are some
reminders you should share to your remote learners on a synchronous platform
like Google meet, Zoom, MOOCS, or any other platforms you are familiar with
and are using.

With the use of any Google meet, zoom, or any platform, organize a virtual
class. Do this with the guidance of your resource teacher.
Make sure your device is charged.
Find a quiet place free of distractions.
Be on time for the class.
Be respectful at all times.
Stay on mute and raise hand only if needed.
Stay focused and on task so you won’t miss any information
Turn on your camera.
Use kind words all the time.

Episode 2:
Classroom Routines and Procedures in a
Face-to-face and Remote Learning

At the end of this learning episode, the FS student must have:

• established classroom routines and procedures before, during
and after classes in a face –to-face or in remote learning.
• explained the classroom routines (the what, how, when, and
why those need to be done); and
Learning Outcomes • reflected on the basic questions when building classroom
routines and procedures in the classroom and in remote
learning.

Establishing predictable routines early in the school

year enables you to run your daily activities run smoothly.
Routines are the backbone of daily classroom life. They
facilitate teaching and learning.

Classroom routines set the foundation for a meaningful

school year with teachers and students whether in the classroom or remotely. We
can teach classroom routines remotely, by recording videos and posting these in
the learning management system so students may watch them over and over
again for better retention and for families to view them so they can assist their
children when needed.

Students can take an active role in establishing classroom routines. They

can brainstorm on ideas which they will most likely do and follow. Routines are
important especially when done in remote learning so that there will be less
distractions both for synchronous and asynchronous participation.

Episode 3:
Preparation of Instructional Materials

At the end of this learning episode, the FS student must have:

• Shown skills in the selection, development and use of a
variety of teaching and learning resources to address
learning goals
• Manifested skills in the use of non-digital/ conventional
resources and materials for student engagement in teaching
Learning Outcomes and learning process; and
• Demonstrated positive attitude towards the use of resources
and instructional materials.

Instructional materials are essential tools in the

teaching- learning process. The 21st century learners are
highly visual and manipulative. They can learn best when
they have direct experiences in the teaching and learning
process. Learning would be more meaningful if supported
with various instructional materials.

These include the lectures, readings, textbooks, multimedia components, and

other resources in a course. These materials can be used in both face-to-face
and online classrooms; however, some must be modified or redesigned to be
effective for the online environment. The best instructional materials are aligned
with all other elements in the course, including the learning objectives,
assessments, and activities.

In addition, instructional materials provide the core information that students

will experience, learn, and apply during a course. They hold the power to either
engage or demotivate students. This is especially true for online courses, which
rely on a thoughtful and complete collection of instructional materials that
students will access, explore, absorb, and reference as they proceed in a course.

As such, materials must be carefully planned, selected, organized, refined,

and used in a course for the maximum effect. The planning and selection of
instructional materials should take into consideration both the breadth and depth
of content so that student learning is optimized.
