As I traveled on the bus towards kokta bypass, I was struck by the beauty of the surrounding.
The lush greenery and the fresh aroma of soil and flowers reminded me of my old days of work
in villages surrounded by forests and mountains. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility that I
had not experienced in a long time. Old memory brings smile on face.
From Ayodhya Nagar to Arehdi crusher basti, we cross Sarju Sarover, we’ll find the Bhopal
Municipal Corporation office on our left. Unfortunately, there were trucks loaded with garbage
and a pungent smell around the area. It’s understandable that the smell can be unpleasant and
cause discomfort. I noticed that while the smell was still present, it wasn’t as strong as before.
The smell of sewage and garbage was overwhelming, but this time I was not bother about the
smell. I realized that I accept the reality of slum within three consecutive visits. The smile on my
face covers by napkin.
We heading towards a meeting with women self help group that we requested them last day.
They started the group for saving money to use in emergency case. I thought the purpose of
SHG diluted and restricted to saving and inter-loaning. The members of SHG take loan and
repair their houses and buy cattle for milk. But I realized that the social concern was missing at
the beginning. One of member explains the story of their struggle with sarpanch. The sarpanch
flew away when he saw the SHG members marched towards his door for the demand of water,
road, housing, and electricity. We discussed the leakage of resources due to health problem
and measures to manage this leakage. Season wise illnesses were identified and amount of
money & time spent to treat the disease also come to the surface. The more concern was
raised for rainy season, the precaution at their peak in this time. They used to burn neem and
other mosquito repellent smoking, use ointment for kids to prevent mosquito bites and use of
net was compulsory.
The settlement of sankar khandan basti was recent as compare to main crusher basti. The
people from different caste settled there and have a good relationship among them. Few
families settled in basti from 17 years and few of them came 6 months earlier and prepared
their house. More surprising, the families of basti have built their personal toilet and use it.
Despite the water supply was not there and they have to bring water for domestic needs. I
hardly found toilet in the villages that are used. There was a concern about the pit size that is
not enough and the tank was filled in a span of time. The cost of cleaning the pit is around five
thousand to six thousand. People open defecate with no choice.
The connectivity is so poor that rainy season very tough to handle. People use to stop sending
kids to schools. I have an experience of accident causes by mine dust in my previous
organization. The mine dust is so slippery that bike gets unbalanced and skid. In summer, the
weather get harsh and electricity supply were interrupted. The voltage so low that fan can spin
and air hardly comes out. They spent night with fight against mosquito.
Daily need of vegitable full filled by local market at Ayodhya Nagar. Weekly Mangal market
attened by male members while they came home from work at evening.
