Handloom story
Handlooms are environmentally friendly, and are a viable way to make
a living. The handloom sector provides 4.33 million people with jobs,
and is the second-largest source of employment in rural India. Around
95% of the world's handwoven fabric comes from India.

A 'handloom' is a loom used to weave fabric without having to use any

electricity. Handweaving is performed on pit looms or frame looms
which are usually located in the homes of weavers. Yarn spun by hand
is called ‘hand spun yarn’ and yarn spun by machine is called ‘mill spun
yarn’. Fabrics woven from hand spun yarn on handloom are called
‘khadi’, while mill spun yarn woven on handloom is called ‘handloom
fabric’.

Handloom weavers and fabrics are an integral part of the cultural

heritage and tradition of India. Hand woven cotton, compared to mill
made cotton, is known for its breathability. This means that it allows for
more air penetration which makes it cooler, smoother and more
absorbent

The Khadi movement by Gandhiji was aimed
at boycotting foreign cloth.
Mahatma Gandhi began promoting the
spinning of Khadi for rural self-employment
and self-reliance (instead of using cloth
manufactured industrially in Britain) in the
Khadi 1920s, thus making Khadi an integral part
and an icon of the Swadeshi movement.
Handloom We on our part strive to internationalize this
beautiful fabric.

TEXTILES
OF BENGAL
Records prove that the fine muslin and silks of
the region were so famed that these were big
items of trade among foreign merchants.

Bengal is particularly known for its muslin,

which was said to be so fine that it could pass
through a ring! Bengal has continued this rich
tradition of the art of fine & luxurious weaving.
We in our part strive to showcase these beautiful
traditions .
Madras Checks
Handlooms have been part of the rhythm of life in
India and belong to an industry which is second only
to agriculture. Indian textiles have created turning
points in history. Gandhiji “cremated” foreign fabric
in an act of defiance, collecting them from
sophisticated Indians who wanted to be on the same
page as the British. It drained the British coffers and
marked the beginning of the end of colonial rule.

As historian Sriram once said, “Madras was founded

not for spices andgold but for cloth.”
The artisans, with whom we work,
came in search of work to Bhadoi along
with his family. They learned the art of
handloom carpet making by working as an
artisan. Meanwhile, along with their family
business, they successfully weave exquisite
handloom, hand-knotted & and tufted
carpets. We are happy to have joined hands
in promoting this exotic art of carpet
making.
The oldest region of carpet weaving in India is
Mirzapur in Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh. The
Ganga flows past this town with itsGhats, ancient
temples and waterfalls

The story of carpet making in Mirzapur can be traced

to the Mughalemperor, Akbar, in the 16th century. A
caravan of Persian carpet weavers,it is said, on its way
to the Mughal court was way laid and injured by
dacoits on the Grand Trunk Road. The weavers were
rescued and given shelter by local villagers. The master
Carpets of weaver of the group decided to settle down here and
share his skills with his benefactors. That is how the
Mirzapur renowned carpet industry of Mirzapur took root.

&Bhadohi Many generations of artisans blossomed into gifted

weavers over the past five centuries.
