Corrections - It is the branch of the administration of Criminal Justice System charged with the
responsibility for the custody, supervision, and rehabilitation of the convicted offender.
Bureau of Corrections - An agency under the Department of Justice that is charged with custody
and rehabilitation of national offenders, that is, those sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment
of more than three (3) years
Jail – it is a place of confinement for persons awaiting trial or court action and where the
convicted offenders serve short sentences or penalty of imprisonment.
Rehabilitation - The task of changing an offender’s attitude so that he or she may not commit
another crime in the future
Deterrence - The idea that punishment will be give the offender lesson by showing to others what
would happen to them if they have committed the heinous crime.
Religious programs – it is the program plays a unique role in the moral and spiritual regeneration
of the prisoner.
Maximum security prisoners - This group consists of chronic troublemakers but not as dangerous
as the super security prisoners. They are not allowed to work outside the institution.
Custody - The maintenance or care and protection accorded to people who by authority of law
are temporarily incarcerated for violation of laws and also those who were sentenced by the court
to serve judgment
Medium Security Institution - The institution for dangerous but not incorrigible prisoners in the
Philippines
Under the prison service manual, the prescribed color of prison uniform for maximum security
prison is Orange
Operation Greyhound - Operation conducted by the BJMP wherein a prisoner maybe checked at
any time. His beddings, lockers and personal belongings may also be opened at any time, in his
presence, whenever possible. This practice.
Prison - A correctional institution that has the authority to detain convicted offenders for longer
or extended period of time, including those who are waiting their death sentence
John Howard - The sheriff of Bedsfordshire in 1773 who devoted his life and fortune to prison
reform. After his findings on English Prisons, he recommended the following: single cells for
sleeping, segregation of women, segregation of youth, provision of sanitation facilities, and
abolition of fee system by which jailers obtained money from prisoners
