Sparrow

Masha Pogorelova

Note: this toy is crocheted in continuous spirals in bothloops right side out, do not join or turn if otherwise is
not instructed. Mark the first stitch of each round.
In parentheses you can see the quantity of sts in each round or the number of rounds that are crocheted without
any changes.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (pull up a loop and then yarn over and pull it through again)
dec – decrease (2 sc crochet together)
inc – increase (crochet 2 sc in the next st)
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
st(s) – stitch(s)

Materials and supplies:

- seven colors of the same yarn type: beige, brown, dark yellow, pink, white, red, bright yellow
- hook size that matches the yarn
- a tapestry needle to sew the parts of the toy
- polyester toy stuffing
- two 6 mm round black beads for eyes (it’s better to choose the beads after you have crocheted the head and the
beak, maybe you will like some other bead size more)

I’ve used Baby Yarn 100% acrylic 300 m in 100 g, hook size #1.25. The toy size is about 13 cm.
I needed about: 30 g of beige yarn, 5 g of dark yellow, 20 g of pink yarn, a few meters of white, bright yellow,
red and brown yarn.

30 – 4 sc, inc, 30 sc, inc, 22 sc (60)
31 – 38 – 60 sc (8 rounds)

It’s time to stuff the body and the head if you haven’t done it yet.

39 – (8 sc, dec) 6 times (54)

40 – (7 sc, dec) 6 times (48)
41 – (6 sc, dec) 6 times (42)
42 – (5 sc, dec) 6 times (36)
43 – (4 sc, dec) 6 times (30)
44 – (3 sc, dec) 6 times (24)
45 – (2 sc, dec) 6 times (18)
46 – (1 sc, dec) 6 times (12)

Cut the yarn. Stuff the head firmly. Tighten the opening.

Hips (make 2)
With beige. Leave a long end for sewing
1 – 10 ch, with 1 sl.st join the chains into the circle
2 – 4 – 10 sc (3 rounds)
1 sl.st, cut the yarn, leave an end long enough for sewing

Foot (make 2)
With dark yellow.
Crochet 2 separate toes, cut the yarn. Crochet the 3-d toe and continue to crochet three toes around to make the
foot.

Toe (make 3)
1 – 2 ch, 6 sc into the 2-d ch from the hook
2 – 3 – 6 sc (2 rounds)
4 – 4 sc, dec
Cut the yarn, leave an end long enough for sewing the toes together.

After you have two toes crocheted, make the third toe; do not cut the yarn on it. Crochet around all three toes:

1 – on the 1-st toe – 1 sc

on the 2-d toe – 2 sc
on the 3-d toe - 1 sc, dec, 1 sc
continue crocheting on the other side of the toes:
on the 2-d toe – skip 1 st for sewing, crochet 1
sc, leave the last st for sewing to the 1st toe
on the 1-st toe – skip one st for sewing, crochet
1 sc, dec (9)

Sew in skipped sts the first toe to the second one and the second toe to the third toe (green lines in the picture
above. The blue point shows the place where you finished crocheting).

2 – 5 sc, dec, 2 sc (8)

3 – 1 sc, dec, 5 sc (7)
4 – 7 sc
5 – 3 sc, don’t finish the round, cut the yarn

3
Crochet two feet. Stuff them a little and tighten the openings and hide the yarn tailss inside.

Pin the hips symmetrically to the body (as in the pictures below). The last rounds of hips are a little wider than the
first ones – sew the wider rounds to the body. The Bird will sit better if the hips look a little apart. After you sewed
the hips to the body stuff them firmly and sew the feet to the hips (to its more narrow first rounds)

Beak
With dark yellow

1 – 2 ch, 4 sc
2 – (1 sc, inc) 2 times (6)
3 – (1 sc, inc) 3 times (9)
4 – 9 sc,

Sl.st, cut the yarn, leave a tail long enough for sewing.

Pin the beak in a few different position to choose which

one you like more and sew.
You can leave the beak like this – “closed”, or crochet
the lower part to “open” the beak.

For the lower part of the beak crochet 2 ch, 4 sc into the 2-d ch from the hook, cut the yarn, leaving a tail for
sewing. Pin it under the beak and sew:

Sew two black beads for the eyes.

4
Wing (make 2 of each part)
First part (make 2)
1 – 2 ch, 6 sc
2 – 6 inc (12)
3 – (1 sc, inc) 6 times (18)
4 – (2 sc, inc) 3 times,
1 sc, 7 ch, 6 sc down the chains, beginning from the second ch from the hook,
sl.st into the next st of the wing, 8 ch, 7 sc in chains, beginning from the 2-d ch from the hook,
sl.st into the next st of the wing, 9 ch, 8 sc in chains, beginning from the 2-d ch from the hook,
sl.st into the next st of the wing, 10 ch, 9 sc in chains, beginning from the 2-d ch from the hook,
2 sc, sl.st, cut the yarn

Second part (make 2)

1 – 2 ch, 6 sc
2 – 6 inc (12)
3 – (1 sc, inc) 6 times (18)
4 – (2 sc, inc) 3 times,
10 ch, 9 sc down the chains, beginning from the second ch from the hook,
sc into the next st of the wing, 9 ch, 8 sc in chains, beginning from the 2-d ch from the hook,
sc into the next st of the wing, 8 ch, 7 sc in chains, beginning from the 2-d ch from the hook,
sc into the next st of the wing, 7 ch, 6 sc in chains, beginning from the 2-d ch from the hook,
1 sc into the same st from which you started to crochet the last “feather” (7 chains), 1 sc in the next st,
sl.st, cut the yarn

Put two parts together right sides out – the long feather of one part to the long feather of the other part. And sew
them together with brown yarn. When two wings are finished pin them symmetrically to the body and sew.

Tail
With beige yarn crochet 5 joined feathers:

1 – 13 ch, skip 3 ch, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 4 sc

2 – 15 ch, skip 3 ch, 4 dc, 3 hdc, 5 sc
3 – 13 ch, skip 3 ch, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 4 sc
4 – 15 ch, skip 3 ch, 4 dc, 3 hdc, 5 sc
5 – 13 ch, skip 3 ch, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 4 sc

5
You will get something that looks like half of a flower. Put the feathers together and sew to the body:

Don’t sew the tail too high or your bird will not be able to sit.

Scarf
With pink. Crochet in rows.

6 ch, beginning from the 3-d ch from the hook crochet

4 sc, turn,
(ch, turn, 4 sc) 90 rows

Try the scarf on the bird while crocheting. Maybe you

will need a little more or less rows.

Don’t forget that the scarf will look longer after you
make the tails on its ends. It’s a good idea to crochet the
scarf a little shorter than you want.

Cut the yarn, hide the tails or leave them as a part of brushes on the ends of the scarf.

Fix small yarn pieces on the ends of the scarf to make brushes. You can fix them separately or a few pieces
together. Try the scarf on and cut the brushes to the same length.

6
Hat
With pink
1 – 2 ch, 6 sc into the 2-d ch from the hook
2 – 6 inc (12)
3 – 12 sc
4 – (1 sc, inc) 6 times (18)
5 – 18 sc
6 – (2 sc, inc) 6 times (24)
7 – 8 – 24 sc (2 rounds)
9 – (3 sc, inc) 3 times, 12 sc (27)
10 – (4 sc, inc) 3 times, 12 sc (30)
11 – (4 sc, inc) 6 times (36)
12 – (5 sc, inc) 3 times, 18 sc (39)
13 – (6 sc, inc) 3 times, 18 sc (42)
14 – 42 sc
15 – (6 sc, inc) 6 times (48)
16 – (7 sc, inc) 6 times (54)
17 – 54 sc
18 – (8 sc, inc) 6 times (60)
19 – 60 sc
20 – (9 sc, inc) 6 times (66)
21 – 35 – 66 sc (15 rounds)

Try the hat on the head while crocheting (8 rounds will

be bended). You can crochet a few rounds more or
less if it doesn’t fit.

Finish the hat with sl.st. Cut the yarn; leave a tail long enough for sewing.

Bend 8 rounds outside. Embroider vertical stripes 5 sts high to decorate the hat and to fix the bending. Leave one
round above the stripes and two rounds below them. Embroider one stripe bright yellow, one stripe white.

To make the pom pom cut two cardboard circles about 6 cm in diameter. Cut a small round hole in the middle of
each circle. Put the circles together, without any fixing. Wind the circles closely with red, pink, white and bright
yellow yarn. When the circle is covered completely put the scissors between the two circles of the cardboard and
cut the yarn loops around the outer edge. Take a long piece of pink yarn between the two circles, tie and fix it
firmly round the stitches that meet in the centre. Cut and take the cardboard circles out of your pom pom. Cut the
pom pom around a little to make it tidier and round and sew it to the hat point with the yarn you have used to tie
the middle of the pom pom. Bend the hat point a little and fix it with a few stitches.
Put the hat on the bird’s head and sew.

THAT’S ALL!
