Materials: Items will vary depending on bag variation.

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in choice of colors. See “variations” at end of pattern for color suggestions.
Note: Make sure yarns used for main part of bag are of similar weight, preferably same brand. Different yarns may
cause each section of the bag to be a different size.

Hooks: G, H, I

Miscellaneous: 3 – ¾” buttons (or desired size for eyes), black thread, sewing needle

Gauge: not necessary for this project

Size: Approximately 14” x 14”

Note: When working in the round, do not join at the end of each round, unless noted. Work in continuous rounds,
placing a marker at the beginning of the round.

Please read through entire pattern before beginning. Basic crochet skills needed. Further help available online or
through email.

1
Overview of Pattern
It is easiest to follow this sequence. Make sure to follow individual pattern parts for instructions.
1. Make rectangle.
2. Make all parts.
3. Fold top edge to wrong side and sew along casing line (see instructions). Repeat for bottom edge.
4. Attach ALL parts and add any stitching (if applicable). Make sure all parts stay 3” below top edge of
bag or they will be scrunched when drawstring is pull closed.
5. Make straps.
6. Fold bag in half, with right sides together. Sew along seams, from bottom edge to casing line ONLY.
7. Turn inside out.
8. Finish attaching drawstrings and sew casing edges together.

Tips: Bag is worked as a long rectangle, changing colors to create different sections of characters.
Pattern is written for sample as shown above (purple and yellow “D Men”, but any color sequence may be
used. Refer to chart below for color placement and end of pattern for variations.

2
Tip: Mark either side as the “wrong side” by attaching a scrap of yarn or stitch marker. This will help avoid
confusion in future steps.

Casing: Fold top edge to wrong side of bag, approximately 1”, creating a casing for the drawstring. With
matching yarn and yarn needle, stitch “top edge” (which is now folded over) to bag. Repeat for bottom edge.

Features: Follow directions below or under “variations” for making features. Sew all features in place before
going on.

Drawstring (make 2):

Note: Para chord or lightweight rope could be used instead of crocheting straps. Attach the same way. I would
suggest using a needle and thread to sew these items in place before crocheting side seams.

With H hook and yarn color of choice, create a chain 30” long (NOT 30 chains, 30 INCHES). Sc in 2nd ch from
hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st to end. Finish off, leaving approximately 10” for sewing to
bag.

Seaming sides of bag: After all features have been sewn on, place bag on flat surface, right
side up.
*Lay one drawstring on center line (see arrow in photo at right), with short end even with
side seam. Pin in place. Fold bag with right sides together. With yarn needle and matching
yarn, sew side seams together from bottom of bag to casing line ONLY, making sure to sew
through end of drawstring.
Note: Do NOT sew to top edge of bag. This will close the casing and the drawstring will not
be able to be added.
Make sure end of drawstring is securely attached to bottom corner of bag.*
Repeat for other side seam. Turn bag right-side out.

Use a yarn needle or crochet hook to pull unhooked end of drawstring through front casing.
Note: this can be a little tricky. I made a long hook with a wire hanger, then made a loop out of the yarn tail and
pulled it carefully through casing (see photo below, left).
Use yarn tail to securely sew end of drawstring to left end of casing (see arrow in photo below, right). Turn bag
over and repeat for second drawstring.

After both drawstrings have been attached to bag, sew inside edges of casing section together (see arrow in
photo above, left). This will help the drawstring pull more evenly.

bag to top edge of strap.
3. With yarn needle and black yarn, sew each short end to bag.
4. Center goggles on top of black strap. See photo for placement. With yarn needle and white yarn, attach
each goggle to bag by sewing around outer edge of white insert piece. Note: sew through bottom of rim
piece, strap and bag to secure in place.
5. After both goggle pieces are sewn in place, sew buttons to insert with a needle and black thread.

Mouth: With H hook and black yarn, ch 20. Finish off, leaving a long tail for attaching to bag. With yarn needle
and tail, sew mouth in place. See photo for placement.

Hair: Cut several pieces of black yarn, approximately 5” long. Fold piece in half, insert hook under a stitch on
the bag above the goggles. Pull ends through loop (created by folding strand in half), then pull snug. Repeat
several times, staggering placement. See photo.

Symbol: With H hook and black yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle
of 8 sc sts), sl st to join. Change to light blue yarn. Working in BLO for this round, *(hdc, ch 1, sc) in next st, sc,*
repeat to end of round, sl st to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
With H hook an black yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts),
sl st to join. Ch 2, 2hdc in each st to end of round. (16sts) Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing to pocket.

Stack first piece on top of black circle then on top of pocket. With yarn needle and black yarn tail stitch through
center, then sew outer edge of circle to pocket. With yarn needle and light blue yarn, stitch line on center circle.
See photo.
With yarn needle and matching yarn, sew pocket to bag, leaving top edge open.

Purple Man Features:

Follow instructions for “yellow man” goggles strap and goggles/eyes pieces, making only one insert and one rim.
Do not assemble goggles until noted below.

Purple eyelid: With H hook and purple yarn, ch 13 (not loose), sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
(12sts)
Note: See graphic at end of pattern for “same” and “next” placement.

With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew eyelids to outer edge of white eye insert. See photo.

Mouth: With H hook and black yarn, ch 20. Finish off, leaving a long tail for attaching to bag. With yarn needle
and tail, sew mouth in place. See photo for placement.

Teeth
Small (make 2 or more): Leave yarn tail at beginning for attaching to bag. With H hook and white yarn, ch 3, sc
in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch. Ch 1, turn, sc in same st, sl st in last. Finish off and weave in ends.

in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch. Ch 1, turn, sc in same st, sc2tog, sl st in last. Finish off and weave in ends.

His teeth should be crooked and shaped weird. Do this when stitching in place. Also, turn teeth in different
directions (attach side or top edge next to mouth).

With yarn needle and yarn tail sew bottom edge of tooth in place, next to mouth.

Hair: Cut several pieces of purple yarn (sample is Bernat Roving. Wool works great! Worsted weight yarn could
be substituted for a slightly different look), approximately 5” long. Fold piece in half, insert hook under a stitch on
the bag above the goggle. Pull ends through loop (created by folding strand in half), then pull snug. Repeat
several times. Pull strands apart and gently comb/rat. See photo for placement.

Other uses for this pattern:

~ Make bag according to instructions above, without top casing or drawstring.

Use as a pillow sham/case.
~ Make as above, then stuff or insert pillow form and sew top seam closed for a
pillow.
~ Add features to hats, bags, scarves, premade items too!
This is a pillow I bought on sale to sew the monster parts on. Make your own with
fur yarn. I would suggest holding a strand of ww yarn with fur. Makes it much
easier to see stitches, plus creates a firmer fabric.
