Properties and Uses of Electromagnetic Waves: In One Complete Package

Background Information for Learners

Electromagnetic Waves are disturbance in a field that carries energy and does not require
a medium to travel. It differ in terms of wavelength, frequency and energy. Wavelength is the
distance measured from one crest of a wave to the next crest or from one through to the second
through, while, frequency is the number of cycles a wave completes in one second and is
expressed in Hertz, and lastly, energy is carried by/ possessed by the photons. Photons are the
bundles of wave energy.

Types of Electromagnetic Waves

Radio Waves have the longest wavelength

in the electromagnetic spectrum. They are produced
by making electrons vibrate in the antenna. They
are used to transmit sound and pictures information
over long distance. They are used mostly in Radio
and Television Communication. Figure 1. A radio

Microwaves can penetrate the atmosphere of the

earth. Their signals are transferred by an antenna to a
satellite which amplifies and re-transmits the signal to
an antennae in other parts if the world. They are used
in Satellite television and communication and for
cooking food.

Figure 2. Microwave

Infrared Waves are emitted by all objects. The amount

and wavelength of radiation depend on temperature.
Below 500 o c, an object emits only infrared radiation.
Above 500 o c, an object glows and emits both infrared
and some visible light. They are used in Remote control,
household electrical appliances.

Figure 3. Infrared Waves

Visible Spectrum It is the light we can see. The

spectrum of white light is called the visible spectrum.
When a white light passes through a prism, it is
separated into its constituent colors: red, orange,
yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. It is used in
artificial lighting, optical fibers in medical uses, screen
of electronic devices.

Figure 4. Visible Spectrum

Ultraviolet Radiation lies just beyond the violet end
of the visible spectrum. UV waves have shorter
wavelengths than the visible light and carry more
energy. Used in Sterilization, Fluorescence, it also
produces vitamin D in the skin and gives tanning
effect, but could be harmful to some extent.

Figure 5. Ultraviolet Radiation

X – Rays are produced by using an x-ray tube. They

are emitted when fast moving electrons hit a metal
target. These are used in medical field and
engineering applications.
Figure 6. X-rays

Gamma Rays lie at the end of the electromagnetic

spectrum and are more dangerous. They are
emitted by stars and some radioactive substances.
They are very strong that they can kill living cells.
They are used in medical treatment.

Learning Competency
Cite examples of practical applications of the different regions of EM waves, such as the use
of radio waves in telecommunications. S10FE-IIc-d-48

Activity 1 – Eureka! Eureka! I Found it!

Directions: Let’s try to test your memory with your past lesson. So stop! Look! And write your
answer on the space provide for.

DID YOU KNOW?
A microwave cooks food much
faster than a conventional oven
because it heats both the inside
and outside of the food the
same time.

Activity 3 – You Spin my head, right round right round…

Directions: Spinning your head will make you dizzy. So better yet, try to answer the questions
briefly and concisely.

1. Cite some similarities and differences of each type of electromagnetic waves.
