Electro Chemistry
This consists of gas at 1 atmospheric pressure bubbling over a platinum electrode immersed in 1 M HCl at
25oC (298 K) as shown in figure. The platinum electrode is coated with platinum black to increase its
surface. The hydrogen electrode thus constructed forms a half cell which on coupling with any other half
cell begins to work on the principle of oxidation or reduction. Electrode depending upon the circumstances
work both an anode or cathode.
Cell reaction of standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) when it acts as anode is:
H2(g)→2H++2e−
It is as represented as
H2(g)(1atm)Pt∣H3O(aq)+(1.0M)
When it acts as cathode, the cell reaction is
2H++2e−→H2(aq)
and it is represented as
H3O(aq)+(1.0M)∣(1atm)Pt

11. Define Resistivity. SI unit?
It is the resistance when area of cross section is 1𝒎𝟐 and length is 1m w.r.t conductor.
SI unit → m
12. What is specific conductance?
It is the reciprocal of resistivity. It is the conductance of of electrolytes when its volume is 1𝑚3 .
13. State kohlrausch law.
It state that limiting molar conductivity of an electrolyte can be represented as the sum of the individual
contribution of the anion and cation of the electrolyte.
14. What is molar conductivity?
It is the molar conductance of 1 molar electrolyte when its volume is 1molesolution in 𝑐𝑚3 .
15. State Faraday’s laws of electrolysis
The laws state that
Law 1: the amount of chemical reaction which occurs at any electrode during electrolysis by a current is
proportional to the quantity of electricity passed through the electrolyte.
Law 2: the amounts of different substances are liberated by the same quantity of electricity passing through the
electrolytic solution are proportional to their chemical equivalent weights.
16. What is secondary cell? Explain Dry cell or leclanche cell
It is the cell can be recharge and reuse.
Ex: lead storage cell
Chemical Reaction:
Anode: H2→2H++2e−
Cathode: 12O2+2H++2e−→H2O
Cell: H2+12O2→H2O
