The Capacitors Store Electrical Power in The Electric Field, Their Effect Is Known As The Capacitance. It Is Also Called The Condenser

The document summarizes an experiment on the AC response of an R-C series circuit. The circuit contains a resistor and capacitor connected in series with an AC power supply. When the capacitance is greater than the resistance, the current leads the voltage by 90 degrees, showing capacitive behavior. When the resistance is greater, the current and voltage are in phase, showing resistive behavior. The experiment was conducted using Multisim software to observe voltage and current waveforms for different resistance and capacitance values. In conclusion, the phase angle between voltage and current in an R-C circuit varies between 0-90 degrees depending on whether the capacitive or resistive component dominates.

Aim of the Experiment: -
To study the AC response of R-C circuit (series).
Tools Required: -
NI MULTISIM 14.0
Theory: -
• A circuit that contains a pure resistance ‘R’(ohms) connected in series with a capacitor ‘C’ is
known as R-C series circuit. When an AC supply voltage ‘v’ is a applied, the current ‘I’ flow in
the circuit.
• The capacitors store electrical power in the electric field, their effect is known as the capacitance. It
is also called the condenser.
• The resister, oppose the flow of current in circuit where the resister connected.
 E0 = I0 √𝑅 2 + 𝑋𝐶2
 E0 = I0 Z (∴ 𝑍 = √𝑅 2 + 𝑋𝐶2 = 𝐼𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑐𝑒)

[Circuit diagram of R-C with AC power supply]

[Phasor diagram of R-C circuit]

Procedure:
Components: AC Power Supply, Capacitor, Resistor, Ground, and Connecting wire.
Instrument: Oscilloscope, Current Clamp.
Step -1: All the component taken from library of Multisim and arranged as in fig-1.
Step-2: The power supply to capacitor helps of AC source.
Step-3: Then the observe the lead or lag of current or voltage the help of oscilloscope.

[Fig-1: Design of R-C circuit having AC response using Multisim 14.0]

Result:

[fig-2: Waveform of R-C circuit (series) when R<C]

[fig-3: Waveform of R-C circuit (series) when R>C]

Observation:
We observer that the lead or lags of current depend upon the value of the Resistance and
Capacitance in R-C circuit. It arrives two cases.
Case-1
When the value of capacitor less than resistor then the circuit behave as pure resistivity circuit i.e.,
current and voltage in a phase. And phase difference is zero shown in fig-3.
Case-2
When the value of capacitor greater than resister then the circuit behave as pure capacitive circuit
i.e., current lead the voltage and phase difference is 90 degrees shown in fig-2.
Conclusion:
We conclude that the pure resistive circuit, the phase angle between voltage and current is zero

and pure capacitive circuit, the phase angle between voltage and current is 90 degrees. So that in R-C

circuit, phase angle between voltage and current is vary between 00 – 900 degree and current lead the

voltage vary by 00 – 900 what ever the value of Resistor(R) and capacitor(C).
