4-5 A shunt dc motor has ܴA = ͲǤͳߗand ܸܶ = ͶͶͲܸǤ For an output power of 37.3 kW, the speed is
݊ = ͳͷͲͲ‫ݒ݁ݎ‬Ȁ݉݅݊ and the armature current is IA = 87A. Ignore rotational losses in this problem.

(a) Find the developed power and the developed torque

(b) Find the no-load speed of the motor. [Solution: (a) 37520 W, 238.9 N.m; (b) 160.3 rad/s (or 1531 r/min)]
4-6 A DC shunt-wound motor runs at 1320 r/min when the armature current drawn from a 200V supply
is 18 A and the field resistance is 400 :. The armature resistance is 0.73 :.

(a) What field resistance is required for a no-load speed of 1320 r/min?

(b) What is the no-load speed when the field resistance is 510 :?
[Solution: (a) 373 Ω ; (b) ͳͺͺǤͻ‫݀ܽݎ‬Ȁ‫( ݏ‬or ͳͺͲ͵‫ݎ‬Ȁ݉݅݊ ) ]
4-7 A shunt-wound DC motor runs on a 600 V supply with an armature current of 200 A when
running at 740 r/min with an armature resistance of 0.125Ω and a shunt resistance of 72 Ω. For this
problem, neglect frictional losses. What is the

(a) torque;

(b) output power of the motor;

(c) power conversion efficiency?

[Solution: (a) 1484 N.m; (b) 115 kW ; (c) 92%]

4-8 The shunt dc motor shown in the figure below has the following specifications:

ܲ‫ = ݀݁ݐܽݎ‬15݄‫; ݌‬ I‫ܮ‬ǡ ‫ = ݀݁ݐܽݎ‬55 A; ݊‫ݒ݁ݎͲͲʹͳ = ݀݁ݐܽݎ‬Ȁ݉݅݊

ܸܶ = ʹͶͲܸ; ܴA = ͲǤͶߗ; ܴ‫;ߗͲͲͳ = ܨ‬

ܴ݆ܽ݀ = ͳͶͲ‫ ݋ݐ‬ͶͲͲߗ

The magnetization curve is also shown below. Over the range IF = 0 to IF = 1.0A, this curve is given
approximately by the equation ‫ܧ‬஺ = −250Iிଶ + 530I ி. Note that the curve, and the equation, apply to

a rotation speed of 1200 rev/min.

If the resistor ܴ݆ܽ݀ can vary from 140 to 400 Ω, what are the maximum and minimum no-load speeds
possible with this motor?
[Solution: 1461.9 r/min and 1028.5 r/min]
4-9 When operated from a 230-V dc supply, a dc series motor operates at 975 r/min with a line current
of 90A. Its armature-circuit resistance is 0.11 Ω and its series field resistance is 0.08 Ω. Due to
saturation effects, the flux produced by an armature current of 30 A is 48 percent of that at an
armature current of 90 A. Find the motor speed when the supply voltage is 230-V dc and the armature
current is 30 A. [Solution: 2140 r/min]

4-10 The figure below shows a 250-V series dc motor with compensating windings, and a total series
resistance ܴA + ܴ‫ ܨ‬of 0.08 :. The series field consists of ܰ‫ = ܨ‬25 turns per pole. Assume that the
motor constant (‫ )∅ܭ‬is linearly related to the field current by:

‫ = ∅ܭ‬4 × 10−4 ܰ‫ܨ‬IF

(a) Find the speed and induced torque of this motor when its armature current is 50A.
(b) Derive and plot the torque-speed characteristic for this motor.
2500
[Solution: (a) 492 rad/s (4698 r/min), 25 N.m; (b) ߱ ൌ − 8 (where ߱ is speed and ߬ is torque.
√߬
The torque-speed curve will be given in the practical session) ]
4-11 A series-connected dc motor has ܴ‫ ܨ‬+ ܴA = ͲǤ͸ߗ and draws IA = 10 A from the dc source
voltage VT = 220 V while running at 900 rev/min. What is the speed for IA = 20 A ? Assume a linear
relationship between IA and ∅. [Solution: ͶͷǤͺͲ‫݀ܽݎ‬Ȁ‫( ݏ‬or Ͷ͵͹ǤͶ‫ݎ‬Ȁ݉in) ]
