I. CHEMICAL PRODUCT AND COMPANY IDENTIFICATION

Product Name : Hexane
Use : Hexane is used as a solvent in the extraction of vegetable oils from cotttonseed,
peanuts, copra, and other vegetable materials. It is also used in rubber cements as it
is virtually free of aromatics. It is also used as a selective and efficient diluent
during the polymerisation process in the manufacture of polyethylene and other
polymers and resins. They are also common constituents of gasoline and glues used
for shoes, leather products, and roofing. Additionally, it is used as a cleansing
agent for shoe, furniture and textile manufacturing.

Chemical Family : Alifatic hydrocarbon
Synonyms : Hexane
Molecular Formula : C6H14
CAS Number : 110-54-3
UN Number : 1208
EC Number : 203-777-6

IV. FIRST AID MEASURES

General Advice : When symptoms persist or in all cases of doubt seek medical advice.
Inhalation : Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is
difficult, give oxygen. If rapid recovery does not occur, transport to medical facility
for additional treatment.
Skin Contact : Remove contaminated clothing. Flush exposed area with water and follow by
washing with soap if available.
Eye Contact : Flush eyes with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally open
upper and lower eyelids. If irritation persist get medical attention.
Ingestion : Do not induce vomiting, transport to neasrest medical facility for additional
treatment. If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep head below hips to prevent
aspiration.

V. FIRE - FIGHTING MEASURES

o
Flash Point : - 22 C
Auto-ignition Temperature : 225 oC
Explosive Limits : 1.2 - 7.5 %vol
Extinguishing Media : Carbon dioxide, dry extinguishing media, water spray, alcohol resistant foam.
Unsuitable extinguishing media : Water in a jet
Fire Fighting Procedures : Evacuate area. If a leak or spill spill has not ignited, use water spray to disperse the
vapours and to protect personnel attempting to stop a leak. Prevent run-off from
fire control or dilution from entering streams, sewers or drinking water supply. Use
water spray to cool fire-exposed surfaces and to protect personnel.
Special Protective Equipment for Fire- : Wear self-contained breathing apparatus with full face mask and protective
Fighter clothing.

VI. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions : Avoid contact with spilled material. Warn or evacuate occupants in surrounding
and downwind areas if required, due to toxicity or flammability of the material.
Shut off leak, if possible to do so without risk. Remove all possible sources of
ignition in thePage
surrounding
3 of 7 area. Attempt to disperse the vapour or to direct its flow
to a safe location for example by using fog spary. Take precautionary measures
against static discharge. Ensure electrical continuity by bonding and grounding
(earthing) all equipments.

Avoid contact with spilled material. Warn or evacuate occupants in surrounding

and downwind areas if required, due to toxicity or flammability of the material.
Shut off leak, if possible to do so without risk. Remove all possible sources of
ignition in the surrounding area. Attempt to disperse the vapour or to direct its flow
to a safe location for example by using fog spary. Take precautionary measures
against static discharge. Ensure electrical continuity by bonding and grounding
(earthing) all equipments.
Environment Precautions : Use appropriate containment (of product and fire fighting water) to avoid
environmental contamination. Prevent from spreading or entering drains, ditches, or
rivers by using sand, earth, or other appropriate barriers.
Methods for Cleaning Up : For Small Spill
Transfer by mechanical means to a labelled, sealable container for product
recovery or safe disposal. Allow residues to evaporate or soak up with an
appropriate absorbent material and dispose of safely. Remove contaminated soil
and dispose of safely.
For Large Spill
Transfer by mechanical means such as vacuum truck to a salvage tank for recovery
or safe disposal. Do not flush away residues with water. Retain as contaminated
waste. Allow residues to evaporate or soak up with an appropriate absorbent
material and dispose of safely. Remove contaminated soil and dispose of safely.

VII. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling : Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Do not breathe vapours or spray mist.
Handle with care. Use only in well-ventilated area. Extinguish any naked flames.
Do not smoke. Remove ignition sources. Avoid sparks. Electrostatic charges may
be generated during pumping. Electrostatic discharges may cause fire. Ensure
electrical continuity by bonding and grounding (earthing) all equipment. Avoid
splash filling. Do not use compressed air for filling, discharging or handling.
Storage : Must be stored in a diked (bunded) well-ventilated area, away from sunlight,
ignition sources and other sources of heat. Bulk storage tanks shoul be diked
(bunded). Keep away from aerosols, flammables, oxidizing agents, and corrosives
materials. Storage temperature : ambient.

VIII. EXPOSURE CONTROL / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Exposure standards : American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)
n-Hexane : TWA - 50 ppm
The time weighted average concentration for a normal 8-hour workday and a 40-
hour workweek, to which nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed, day after
day, without adverse effect.

Respiratory Protection : If engineering control do not maintain airborne contaminant concentrations at a

level which is adequate to protect worker health, an approved respirator may be
appropriate. Types of respirators to be considered for this material include : half-
face respirator type A filter material. For high airborne concentrations, use an
approved supplied-air respirator, operated in positive pressure mode. Supplied air
respirators with an escape bottle may be appropriate when oxygen level are
inadequate.
Skin and Body Protection : Wear protective clothing which is chemical resistant to this material. Safety shoes
and boots should also be chemical resistant.
Eye Protection : If contact is likely, safety glasses with side shields are recommended.
Hand Protection : Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves to prevent skin exposure.
