Power Transmission System

The document describes different types of power transmission systems: open drive, cross drive, quarter-turn drive, spur gear, and bevel gear. It provides examples of how the pulleys or gears rotate in each type. It then gives an example problem calculating the diameter of a driven pulley given the engine speed, pulley diameters, and required equipment speed. Finally, it lists the diameters and speeds of pulleys in a power transmission system and calculates the linear speed of the last pulley.

Open Drive

▪ Pulleys rotate in the SAME direction. Gear Directions

Example:
Driver pulley moves clockwise
Driven pulley moves clockwise

Cross Drive

▪ Pulleys rotate in OPPOSITE directions.

Example:
Driver pulley moves clockwise
Driven pulley moves anti-clockwise

Quarter-turn Drive

▪ Pulleys rotate in the SAME direction.

Example:
Driver pulley moves clockwise
Driven pulley moves clockwise

Spur Gear Sample Problems:

A forage chopper will be driven by a 5-HP
diesel engine through a V-belt drive. The 10-
inch-diameter engine has a linear speed of
78.54 fps, while the required speed of the
equipment is 650 rpm. Find the diameter of
the driven pulley.
650 rpm
▪ Gears rotate in OPPOSITE directions. 78.54 fps
Example:
Driver gear moves counterclockwise
Driven gear moves clockwise D1 = 10 in ?

121.78 in

Convert linear speed (78.54 fps) to angular

speed.
