1. Introduction
This document describes the HDVG Control Panel, intended for easy
configuration of the video input and output settings for RenderEngine on single
or multiple SDVG and HDVG rendering hosts.
The HDVG Control Panel is required for correct configuration and running of
RenderEngine for Linux. Configurations made with the HDVG Control Panel
wizard are saved as a profile in an XML file. If this profile is not present on the
system, RenderEngine for Linux can be launched, but the settings defined during
installation will be used, with no genlock or video insertions available.
Multiple DVG hosts can be connected to the same Shared Data directory
(G:\config by default), to read the appropriate settings for their hardware from a
single profile.
The HDVG Control Panel is installed automatically, upon first installation, as
part of the 3Designer Suite of applications.

2. Setting Up a Profile
This section includes the following:
1.1 Opening the Control Panel
1.2 Defining a Stream
1.3 Setting Properties for a Stream

1.1. Opening the Control Panel

¾ To open the Control Panel:
• From the Start menu, select Programs > Orad > HDVGCtrlPanel.
The Control Panel opens.
HDVG Control Panel
3

Once the Control Panel list pane is populated, you can click on any area in the
list pane, and the settings for the selection will be displayed.
Any setting made to a stream is reflected in the Control Panel list window.
Streams or units added can be grouped at any time, as required, by moving
them up or down in the list pane, using the Up/Down arrow buttons. For more
information, see Menu Options, on page 17.

1.2. Defining a Stream

A stream is a rendering unit or a chain of rendering units that represents the
system output. It defines the global input and output settings for multiple
rendering hosts (DVGs). For instance, if the Render Stream is set to work in
PAL, then all rendering hosts inside the stream will use PAL for the output
format.
A stream must be set up with the properties required to work with your
broadcasting environment. You can define up to 12 streams, each with its own
properties and graphic capabilities.
Each stream can have additional rendering units that represent the capabilities of
your system, i.e., your DVGs. Properties must be defined for each additional
unit, as well.
After setting up a stream and its respective rendering unit(s), use the setup
wizard to set the work properties.

¾ To create a stream:
1. In the HDVG Control Panel screen, select Edit > Add Render Stream.
A stream is added in the Control Panel list pane.
HDVG Control Panel
4

2. Click Next.
The following screen is displayed.

3. Rename the stream as required.

5

¾ To add render units to the stream:

• Select a stream and click Add RenderUnit.
A render unit is associated with the stream.

1.3. Setting Properties for a Stream

Use the setup wizard to set the properties for a stream and its related rendering
unit or units.

¾ To start the setup wizard, and set the properties:

1. Select a stream or render unit, and click Next.
The Video Formats options are displayed.

Each field allows you to define video formats as follows:

Field Definition
Native (Main) Defines the Video format of the input and output to and
from the DVG system/main board.
Additional Defines the Video format of the input and output to and
from the rendering unit (board) used for graphic insertions
into the main output image. Affects output from auxiliary
boards only.
2. Select the video format for the native board from the drop-down list. If
required, select an alternative video format for an additional board.
3. Click Next to continue.
HDVG Control Panel
7

The Add Boards to DVG definitions are displayed.

The Hostname must be the same name as the DVG. You can find the
DVG hostname using the PuTTy utility.

¾ To find the DVG Host name:

a. Open the PuTTy utility (Start > All Programs > PuTTy > PuTTy).
b. Fill in the Host Name (or IP address).
A DOS Scripting window opens.
c. When prompted for login, type in root, and press ENTER.
d. Type in hostname, and press ENTER.
The Host name is displayed. (For example, hqa-255.)

4. Add board as follows:

Field Definition
Main Adds a DVG Main board to the profile. All SDVG
and HDVG hardware contains a Main board, therefore
this must be defined.
Extension Increases the number of video insertions to 4 by
adding a board to the Main DVG board in the profile
window, and provides an additional input for the
internal mixer.
HDVG Grabber Adds an Auxiliary DVG board with video grabbing
capabilities to the profile.
HDVG Control Panel
8

Field Definition
HDVG Delay&Grab Adds an Auxiliary DVG board with both video
grabbing and delay capabilities to the profile.
HDVG Delay Adds an Auxiliary DVG board with delay capabilities
to the profile.
Any board you add is displayed under its render unit in the Control Panel list
pane, as shown below.

Using the HDVG Control Panel, you define the video sources (insertions)
that can be assigned to scene objects in RenderEngine.
Up to 12 SD Color insertions, or 5 HD Color insertions (plus combinations
of the two) can be defined.
When working with a Main & Piggy board, insertions 1 to 4 (in SD)
correspond with insertions 1 to 4 in RenderEngine.
When additional Auxiliary boards are present, the numbering changes.
When a single Auxiliary board is present, insertions 1 to 4 are assigned to
the Auxiliary board, and insertions 5 to 8 are assigned to the Main & Piggy
board.
When two Auxiliary boards are present, insertions 1 to 4 are assigned to
Aux 1, insertions 5 to 8 are assigned to Aux 2 and insertions 9 to 12 are
assigned to Main & Piggy.
When working in HD, there is a maximum of 2 insertions per board.
Changing output format or changing the grabbing for the Auxiliary boards
between Native and Additional will reset any assigned insertions.
For further information about the DVG video connections, see the
appropriate hardware manual.

5. Click Next to continue.

to the type of board. (If not, proceed to step 9.)
If you added an HDVG Grabber board, the following is displayed:

9. Set the following definitions:

Field Definition
Video Format Select Native to use the format of the main board, or
Additional to use a different format.
Grabbing Scale X / Y decreases the resolution of the grabbed
video insertion in half. This improves scene
performance, but at the expense of video quality for
those insertions.
