Quarter: 2 Week: 5-6 SSLM No. 13 ELC(s): Install Operating System

(OS) in accordance with established installation procedures and to comply with end-
user requirements.
 Objectives:
A. List the hardware requirements in installing Windows 7 Operating System.
B. Give the steps in installing Windows 7 Operating System.
 Title of Textbook/LM to Study: ___________________________________
 Chapter: ___ Pages: ___ Topic: Installing windows 7 Operating System

Let Us Discover

In the previous topic, you have created portable bootable devices and prepared customized
installers. Your next challenge is for you to install an operating system to a computer device.
Operating System (OS) is a program or set of instructions that act as an interface between
the user and the computer hardware. It enables your hardware peripherals to communicate
with the software and its responsible for running computer programs. It also manages all the
activities in a computer system such as:
 File Management;
 Memory Management;
 Processor Management;
 Device Management; and
 Network Management for Network Operating Systems (NOS)
Before you start the installation process, you need to check if your hardware components
met the hardware requirement of a specific operating system.
For Windows 7, the following are the hardware requirements:

➢ Processor – 1 GHz (for x86 ➢ DVD-ROM drive

processors) or 1.4 GHz (for ➢ Super VGA (800x600) or
x64 processors) higher resolution monitor
Recommended: 2 GHz or faster ➢ Keyboard and Microsoft
➢ RAM 512 MB mouse (or compatible
➢ Recommended: 2GB or more pointing device)
➢ Disk space – 15 GB
➢ Suggested: 40 GB

Steps in installing Windows 7 (Ultimate) Operating System
Note: You might have different interface as shown in this Simplified Self-Learning Module
(SSLM) especially the latest motherboards.

1. Insert the bootable USB flash drive in the USB port or the CD/ DVD disc inside the CD/ DVD
drive.
2.Turn on your computer then press Del or F2 (keys
to press depend on your computer’s mainboard) to
enter the BIOS then select Boot tab and select boot
device priority. You may choose [Removable Dev.]
to be set as 1st boot device priority if you are using
a bootable USB flash drive to boot your operating
system. However, when you use a CD or DVD disc,
set [CDROM: P2-ATAPI iHA] as the first boot device
priority then press F10 to save the configuration.
Press Enter key to select the Okay button. Your
computer will then reboot, Windows 7 will then load
the files. Wait until it is done.

3. Setup your language, time and currency format,

keyboard or input method. You may choose the
default settings then click Next.

4. Click on "Install now", since you are doing a clean

or fresh installation.

5. Read the license terms and tick the “I accept

license terms” checkbox and click Next to continue.
6. Select Custom (Advanced) since you are doing a
fresh or clean installation.

7. Choose where you would like to install Windows 7.

If you have more than one drive or partition then you
need to select the appropriate drive and click Next.
If you need to format or partition a drive then click
Drive options (advanced) before clicking Next.

8. Select the unallocated space then click New for

partitioning.

9. Compute the amount of partition (in Megabyte or

MB) for your hard drive. Partition of this drive can be
in a 60% or 40% setting where the 60% will be
allocated for your drive C and the remaining is for
drive D. Partition logically means you divide the
hard disk. To solve for the partition, you need to:
1. Convert GB to MB. Remember that 1GB is
equivalent to 1024 MB. So,
1024 MB
32 GB x = 32,768 MB
1 GB
2. Get the 60 percent of it by multiplying the
result of conversion divided by 100.
32,768 MB x 60 / 100 = 19,660.8 MB or
19,661 MB
Type the result of conversion in the Size section,
then click Apply. Click OK when a message box
appears.
10. Select the Unallocated Space from the list of
disks then Click Apply. This will be allocated for
your drive D.

11. Format all of the partitions you have created by clicking the Format icon. When done,
select the partition where you allocated the 60% of the drive’s space. This is where you
install the Windows 7 operating system. Click Next. Windows will start to copy the files to
your hard drive. It would take about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the speed of your
computer. When the installation is done, your computer will restart. Wait until the Set-up
Windows screen will appear.

12. Provide a username and computer name.

Computer name is based on what you typed in the
username. Click Next. The user account you
create here will be the administrator account which
is the main account for your Windows 7 that has
all the privileges.

13. Set a password for your account and provide a

hint. This hint will help you recall the password
when forgotten.
14. Review your time and date settings. Select a time
zone, correct the date and time and click next to
continue.

15. Select your computer's current location. If you are a home user then choose Home network
otherwise select the appropriate option then Windows will now finalize the settings for your
computer and will restart. After the restart, it will ask you to type your username and
password. If the log on is successful, Windows 7 will load your desktop similar to the picture
shown at the right.

Let Us Try

Activity 1: Draw Me!

Direction: Draw a smiley face ☺ in the first column of the table if the statement is
correct. Otherwise, draw a sad ☹ face.
1. The first thing you should check before installing an operating
system in a computer device is the hardware requirements.
2. With or without Operating System (OS), computers can still
operate.
3. Pressing F2 key will help save the BIOS configuration.

4. You can create two partitions in your hard disk.

5. If you get 60% of the 500GB hard disk and allocate it for drive C,
the result is 307,200 MB.
