NARRATIVE ASSESSMENT
I. Introduction
We the Bachelor of Science in Social Work taking up the Social Work Community
Education subject are required to conduct a seminar for us to apply what we have
learned from the subject. With that said, we organized a seminar that was held in
school with the topic that was all about Gender and Development. We decided to have
this as our main topic because gender issues are still one of the most common issues
in our society nowadays. To discuss this topic, we choose one of our members that is
knowledgeable enough to share her learnings about the said topic.
Learning how to organize a seminar is not the same as when I actually organize a
seminar. The experience itself is enough to say that there are learnings and knowledge
that I acquired during and after the seminar. The seminar not only brought me a wider
understanding about gender and development but it is more on how we handle
organizing a seminar from planning to implementing and how fulfilling it is after the
whole process.
III. Observation
During the seminar I observed that the participants have the willingness to learn about
said topic. I am also aware of their participation not only by means of listening but
their answers everytime the speaker was asking questions. I observed that the
discussion did not become boring since all of the students are participating
accordingly.
As per the result of our post evaluation form, we are glad that we receive different
positive feedback from the participants. However, some recommendations and
suggestions are also considered as our lessons and learnings for the betterment of our
next seminar.
NARRATIVE ASSESSMENT
In the beginning, the speaker asks the participants of who among them have the idea
what is the difference between gender and sex. One of the participants answered and the
speaker said that it would be an important knowledge for them to understand from the start
the difference of two and the importance of those in undergoing the same training in the
future.
Additionally, the one of the slides in the presentation of the speaker discussed Gender
Issues and Biases. Where these are some tendencies in society and culture that assign roles,
behaviors, attitudes and characteristics based on the biological differences to gender issues.
Lastly, the effects of gender-linked “labeling” is the unequal power relations between women
and men assumes that men are superior to men and should be dominant and women are
subordinate. Which has the implication of this is that women tend to assume the reproductive
and community roles while men dominate the productive, the decision makers and leaders.
Overall, for me the message the topic discussed was to recognize that there are blocks
or gender biases to development that prevent people from attaining their full potentials. This
also works to remove actual potential gender biases in all the participants for them to
understand that development is for all, for men and women who have the right to equal
