THE PERIOD OF SELF-DISCOVERY

-1925-1941
- Filipino writers acquired the mastery of English Writing;
- and they are confident and competent and went it to different forms of writing.
- Literature in this period began to grow and flourished in time of this.

Poetry
-the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by
beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts.
-Poetry in this era/time competently written and was later, original, spontaneous,
incorporated social consciousness.

ONE OF THE FAMOUS WRITERS IN THIS IS:


Jose Garcia Villa
-"DOVEGLION"- his pen name; derived from the words dove, eagle and lion
-introduce the reversed consonance rhyme scheme
- known as the “Comma Poet"
- awarded as the National Artist of the Philippines title for Literature in 1978

HIS FAMOUS WORK WAS:


DOVEGLION
-collected poetry/ collection of poems, including rare and previously unpublished
materials
In this, Jose Garcia Villa:
-used of reversed consonance rich in symbolism and vivid imagery
-embraced elements of surrealism in his poetry
- attention to rhythm and sound

Short Stories
-"'Golden Era of Filipino English"
- brief fictional prose shorter than a novel
-Known Writers:
Paz M. Benitez- who wrote "Filipino Love Stories" as her first published
anthology of Filipino Short Stories
- Jose Garcia Villa- published Philippine Short stories such as Mir-in-isa who won the
first place in The Age Press short story contest.
-Zoilo M. Galang- published a volume of short stories entitles "Tales of the
Philippines"

Carlos P. Romulo
- Filipino Diplomat
-First Asian who served as a President of the United Nations Assembly
-won the Pulitzer Prize and being the first non-American to be awarded of the said
honor served as an aide to Gen. Douglas MacArthur; he is a General during world war

I am a Filipino
-August 16,1941
-heartfelt tribute to the Philippines and a call to embrace and celebrate the unique
identity of the Filipino people.
-employs a rhetorical style
-uses rich and evocative imagery to paint a vivid picture

Biography
-Deals with the life of a person
-The Great Malayan and Man of Destiny, written by Carlos Quirino, the most famous
biographer of the period. Unfortunately, there are just few of biographies in this era.

Publications
-something made to communicate with the public and are usually printed on a paper
e.g., The Philippine Free Press

Drama
-a written work that tells a story through action and speech and is meant to be acted
on a stage
- UP Little Theater was established
-Plays were considered too wordy and left nothing to the imagination
e.g., "DAUGHTERS FOR SALE AND OTHER PLAYS" by Carlos P. Romulo
