THEORY:

The circuit arrangement of a common emitter uses NPN transistor. The

input signal is applied between base emitter circuits while output
signal is taken from collector base circuit. The emitter base junction is
forward based by battery VBB and collector bias junction is reverse
biased by battery VCC. Here self-biasing is used.
When positive half of the signal is applied, the voltage between
base and emitter (VBE) is increased because it is already positive
with respect to ground. So forward bias is increased i.e., base
current IB is increased. Due to transistor action the collector
current IC is increased by β times. When this current flows through
RC, the drop of voltage across collector resistance RC i.e., ICRC
increases considerably. As a consequence of this the voltage
between collector and emitter VCE decreases. In this way, the
amplified voltage appears across RC. It is also obvious from the
circuit that the positive going input signal appears as a negative
going output signal i.e., there is a phase shift of 180 0 between
input and output. The bypass capacitor connected across RE
provides the degenerative effect caused by negative feedback. It
also provides on alternate path for ac in the output.

PROCEDURE:

 Connect the circuit diagram as shown in figure.

 Vary the frequency of signal generator in steps by keeping the
amplitude constant [Vi = 20mV (p-p)].
 Note down the amplitude of output signal (Vo) from CRO.
 Calculate the gain AV and convert it into decibels (dB).
 Plot the graph: frequency versus AV (dB).
 Find the bandwidth (BW) by noting down f1 & f2.

CALCULATIONS:

1. Voltage Gain AV = Vo/Vi

2. AV (dB) = 20 log AV.
3. Bandwidth (BW) = (f2 –f1) Hz.

PRECAUTIONS:

1. Ensure that the connections made are tight.

2. While noting the amplitude from CRO, try to note it in an accurate
manner.
3. Check for every reading whether the Vi is constant or not.

RESULT:

The frequency response of Common Emitter amplifier is plotted.

Bandwidth = __________Hz.
