INTRODUCTION
The Department of Education (DepEd) launches the Project entitled DepEd’s 236,000 Trees-
A Christmas Gift for the Children. This is an initiative that aims to promote environmental
preservation and instill environmental responsibility among Filipino children. This project serves as a
gift from the Department of Education to ensure a clean and green environment for Filipino children
and future generations.
School tree planting activity is an eye opener that allows students, parents, stakeholders, and
other participants to be knowledgeable with the benefits of trees and foster environment stewardship.
Tree planting is a great way to increase students’ interest in their local environment and achieve
academic goals. This activity was held at Don Manuel Rivera Memorial Integrated National High
School and participated by the School Head, SPTA, Teachers, SSLG, YES-O, Boy Scout and Girl
Scout. Dr. Michael William V. Puna III discussed the importance and benefits of tree planting to all
participants.
When students plant trees, they can see for themselves the structure of trees; learn what they
need and how they grow. Since learning should be contextualized, the school enthusiastically
conducted the said activity. Students become aware that they can play a vital role in protecting the
environment through personal involvement. Ultimately it is hoped that will help them make smart
decisions about conservation and use of our valuable natural resources.
