LESSON 2 – INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION, AND IMMERSION

CREDENTIALS
Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to appreciate the importance of credentials by writing bio
data, curriculum vitae, resume and application letter and by visiting concerned offices where particular credentials could
be secured.
Getting all of you ready in the world of work is part of the last few steps of your stint as Senior High School
students. Part of becoming a pro any of your desired work will mean preparation on your end in terms of physical,
mental, emotional and social aspects.
Work immersion caters opportunities for you to become fit in your chosen field of work. This provides
indispensable experiences which will be of great help as you step out from education towards your job career.
Securing any job posts is a challenging phase. Nonetheless, having the knowledge of the necessary actions and
things to be done will help you ace this stage.
It is imperative to first prepare to complete job applications prior to start job searching. This involves gathering
all the information you will need to apply. One of the vital requirements is that of organizing your credentials.
What is Credential?

Credential is a collection of documents that verify a person's qualification, abilities and experience. Various materials
define the term credential as:

 The abilities and experience that make someone suitable for a particular job or activity, or proof of someone's
abilities and experience (Cambridge English Dictionary)
 A document which shows that a person is qualified to do a particular job (Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The following documents provide a list of credentials of an individual applying for a job:
Biographical Data (Bio Data)
Bio data is short for biographical data. This contains brief personal information including contact details,
address, date of birth, gender, religion, nationality and the like. Bio data is focused on your personal information. With
regards to the ideal length, it must be not more than one (1) page.
Resume
Resume encapsulates the professional profile of an individual. This emphasizes the skills, achievements and
professional roles of a job applicant. This does not require all the details about the job applicant, but only some certain
details personalized to the target job post. The ideal length of a resume is one (1) to a maximum of three (3) pages.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Curriculum vitae lists out the professional summary of a job applicant. It includes all the skills, the jobs and
positions held, education, degrees, professional affiliations that the applicant has acquired. It also highlights the general
capacity of a job applicant. There is no restriction with regards to the length of the CV.
Portfolio
Portfolio has been understood as a collection of pertinent documents that showcases an individual's career and
accomplishments. It is an instrument that could be used to attract potential employers by an employee since it presents
the latter's prior work. In some cases, some companies and organizations include presenting portfolio in the hiring
process. The contents of a portfolio may vary subject to the following factors such as (1) what is/are the purposes and
(2) who is/are the intended audience/s.

In addition, Professor Collins noted, "There is more to the rising importance of credentials in modern society than meets
the eye."Indeed, social science literature suggests three basic conceptions of why credentials work as they do.
1. Credentials are measures, codifying the acquisition of skills and knowledge. You can't look inside someone's brain to
see how much they know, so credentials become the way society measures skills.
2. Credentials are a social currency, a scarce resource that can be traded for privilege. Once, a high school degree could
"purchase" a middle-class job. As more Americans earned high school degrees, the college degree was the ticket to a
good job. Now, post-graduate credentials are increasingly a differentiator. In fact, employers are seeking workers with
credentials for jobs that have not previously required them, termed "credit inflation."
3. Credentials act as a signal to employers. A bachelor's degree from the local state university campus conveys
meaningful information: the employer has hired other graduates from the program and associates it with a reliable
expectation for the degree holder: they can do the job.
