Week 1 - Basics

This document provides a review of concepts in mechanics, structural analysis, and shear force and bending moment calculations for engineering design students. It lists 20 questions for students to review key mechanics concepts like forces, Newton's laws of motion, stress, strain, and material properties. It then provides 8 sample problems for students to practice calculating shear forces and bending moments in different beam configurations like simply supported beams, cantilever beams, and continuous beams with various loading conditions.

Basic Problems on Shear Force and Bending Moments
1. Given a simply supported beam of length 5 meters subjected to a point
load of 10 kN at the midpoint, calculate the shear force and bending
moment at different sections.
2. A uniformly distributed load of 4 kN/m acts on a simply supported beam
of length 8 meters. Calculate the shear force and bending moment at
the supports.
3. Consider a cantilever beam of length 6 meters subjected to a
concentrated load of 15 kN at the free end. Determine the shear force
and bending moment at different sections along the beam.
4. A continuous beam with three equal spans, each of length 4 meters, is
subjected to a point load of 20 kN at the midspan of the middle span.
Calculate the shear force and bending moment at critical sections.
5. Consider a continuous beam with unequal spans of 3 meters, 4 meters,
and 5 meters. Apply a uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m on the entire
length. Calculate the shear force and bending moment at different
sections.
6. A simply supported beam of length 8 meters is loaded with a point load
of 12 kN at 2 meters from one support. Calculate the reactions, shear
force, and bending moment at various locations along the beam.
7. For a cantilever beam of length 5 meters, subjected to a uniformly
distributed load of 8 kN/m, calculate the reactions at the fixed end,
shear force, and bending moment at different sections.
8. A cantilever beam of length 7 meters is subjected to a point load of 25
kN at its free end. Calculate the reactions, shear force, and bending
moment at different locations along the cantilever.
