FIber Optics Communication INIEASAT

This document outlines a course on fiber optics communication that is at the intermediate level, focuses on network engineering, and lasts 3 hours. The course covers topics such as the advantages of optical fiber communication, fiber structures, numerical aperture, single mode vs multimode fibers, propagation conditions in waveguides, estimating guided modes, fiber advantages and disadvantages, and factors that contribute to loss in optical fibers. Students will complete 12 problems that involve calculations related to fiber properties, propagation, power levels, and dispersion.

Course Title: Fiber Optics Communication Field: Networks and Telecom Level: Two (2)

Specialty: Network Engineering Duration: 3hours Coefficient: 6

INSTRUCTIONS:

Students are to answer all questions. Good English and orderly presentation of work is highly

Exercise 1: Optical Fiber Communication

1) Discuss the advantages (twelve) of optical fiber communication system with respect to
wavelength and attenuation. (0.5x12=6 marks)
2) Light travelling in air strikes a glass plate at an angle I 1 = 33o, where I1 is measured between
the incoming ray and glass surface. Upon striking the glass, part of the beam is reflected and
part is refracted. If the refracted and refracted beams make an angle of 90 o with each other,
what is the refractive index of the glass? What is the critical angle for the glass? (0.5x8=4
marks)
3) Explain with necessary diagrams the different types of fiber structures. (4 marks)
4) What is numerical aperture? Derive an expression for numerical aperture and maximum
acceptance angle in case of a step index optical fiber in terms refractive index of core and
cladding material. (5 marks)
5) Compare and contrast : (3x2=6 marks)
a) Single mode Vs multimode fibers.
b) Step index Vs index fibers.
6) Discuss the necessary mathematical condition that the angle of incidence θ must satisfy for the
optical rays to propagate in a dielectric slab waveguide. (4 marks)
7) A multimode step index fiber with a core diameter of 80 µm and a refractive index difference
of 1.5 % is operating at a wavelength of 0.85 µm. If the core refractive index is 1.48, estimate
the normalized frequency for the fiber and the number of guided modes. (4 marks)
8) What are the advantages and disadvantages of multimode and single mode fibers? (0.5x12=6
marks)
9) A step index fiber has a normalized frequency V = 29.9 at 13.50 nm wavelength. If the core
radius is 35 µm, find the numerical aperture. (4 marks)
10) Show with neat diagrams the ray optics representation for the skew rays and meridional rays
in a step index fiber and hence, derive an expression for numerical aperture of step index fiber
in terms of refractive index and maximum ray entrance angle. ( 4+4=8 marks)
11) A continuous 12 km long optical fiber link has a loss of 1.5 dB/km. (3x2=6 marks)
a) What is the minimum optical power level that must be launched into the fiber to
maintain as optical power level of 0.3 µW at the receiving end?
b) What is the required input power if the fiber has a loss of 2.5 dB/km?
12) Discuss the following for optical fibers : i) Absorption; ii) Waveguide dispersion
iii) Material dispersion; iv) Bending loss. (3x4=12 marks)
