EXERCISE 1: Circuit analysis (12 marks)

a) Using source transformation and simplification, determine the voltage between the points
P and Q shown in figure 1.

b) In the circuit shown below the value of the load resistance, R, is chosen so that the load
power dissipation is maximized.
i) Derive the Thevenin equivalent of the network to which the load resistance R is
connected.
ii) Calculate the value of R to maximize the load power dissipation and the value of the
maximum load power.
ii) With the value of R calculated in part (ii) connected in the circuit, calculate the
power supplied by each of the sources.
