Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the (English 7) Self-Learning Module on (Formulating WH

questions)!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 7. All the

activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:
Formulating WH questions.

After going through this self learning module, you are expected to:

1. Distinguish WH questions ;
2. Formulate questions using question words Who and What based on
given sentences; and
3. Use question words Who and What to ask for specific information
appropriately and meaningfully.

PRETEST

Complete the following questions with what or who.

3. ____________ is your favourite color? – It’s blue.

RECAP

In our daily lives, we face new situations: visiting new places, meeting
people, giving or asking personal information. For example, Do you remember
your first day at school? Who was the first person you talked to? How did you
find new normal class?

When we want to get information we ask questions. In these questions we

use words such as; who, what, where, how and when to ask for specific
information.

LESSON

The term “Good Samaritan” today refers to a person who helps

others in a random act of kindness. It is originated from the Parable of the
Good Samaritan, a story that is very familiar to Christians.

Read the story and answer the questions that follows:

“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when

he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat
him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be
going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by
on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and
saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he
travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took
pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on
oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him
to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two
denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said,
‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you
may have.’

Questions:

1. What happened to the man in the story?

Correct! A man in the story was attacked by robbers and left half
dead.
2. Who were the persons happened to passed by the victim?
Correct! A priest and a Levite were the persons happened to passed by
the victim.
3. Who helped the injured man?
Good job! A Samaritan helped the injured man.
4. What did the Samaritan do for the victim of a story?
Great! A Samaritan treated the wound and bandaged the injured inn,
transported him safely to an inn and paid for an innkeeper to take
care of him.
5. What did you learn from the parable?
Very good! Let’s help others who are in need.

Fantastic! Those question words used are called WH questions. Question

words are helpful to ask for specific information, they are used in
interrogative sentences known as “Open Questions” or “WH-questions”. It
ends with a question mark (?)

We often refer to these words as WH words because they include the

letters WH (for example Who, What)

Formulating WH Questions using Who and What

1. Question word WHO

Who is used to ask question in order to obtain information about person/s.

Question Response

Who is at the door? Tom is at the door.

Who wants an apple? I want an apple.

Whom is he dating? He is dating Anna.

(Who is he dating?)

2. Question word WHAT

What is used to ask information about somebody or something.

Question Response

What is this? This is a bird.

What did she say? She said to be quiet.

What have they done? They’ve broken the window.

Question can be a subject or an object question.

In subject question where we want to find information about the subject,

we do not use the auxiliary verb do/does/did. We don’t know the person or
thing who performed the action, and we want to find out.

How to form subject questions:

FORM: Who / What + verb in simple present or simple past + object?

Example of subject questions in the simple present:

➢ Who wants some fruit juice?

We want some fruit juice.

Example of subject questions in the simple past:

➢ Who made a sandwich?

Daniel made a sandwich.

In object question where we want to find information about the object, we

want to know about the receiver of the action. These questions follow
the QUASM formula: Question word + Auxiliary verb +Subject + Main verb.
We use the auxiliary verb do/does/did.

Most questions in English are object questions.

For questions in the simple present, the auxiliary verbs are do and does:

➢ Who does Karen like?

Karen likes Fred.
For question in the simple past, the auxiliary verb is did:

➢ What did Daniel make?

Daniel made a sandwich.
