FINAL EXAM - Solutions - EUM113 - ANSWER

This document contains solutions to differential equation problems: 1) The general solution to the differential equation y′′−8y′+16y=0 is found to be y=c1e4x+c2xe4x+3/2x+7/8. 2) The Laplace transform of the differential equation 2y''−12y'+30y=4cos(5t) is found and inverted, giving the solution y(t)=1/50[-cos(5t)-3sin(5t)-49e3tcos(√6t)+109e3tsin(√6t)]. 3) Further questions involve solving initial value problems for differential equations and finding

Question 1:

Question 2

2b)
Question 3

a)

y′′−8y′+16y=0

m2−8m+16=0

(m−4)(m−4)=0

Therefore, m=4 is a repeated root thus one of the complimentary solutions yc is,

yc=c1e4x+c2xe4x ----- (2 marks)

Now find the remaining complimentary solution yp.

yp=Ax+B, y′p=A, y′′p=0 …….(2 marks)

Now solve for A and B.

0−8A+16(Ax+B)=24x+2

−8A+16Ax+16B=24x+2

Where: 16A=24

A = 24/16 = 3/2

and

−8A+16B=2

−8(32)+16B=2

−24/2+16B=2

−12+16B=2, 16B=14

B=14/16=7/8 ...(2 marks)

Therefore, yp=3/2 x + 7/8

Now, combine both of the complimentary solutions together to arrive at the general solution.

y=yc+yp : y=c1e4x+c2xe4x+3/2x + 7/8 ….(2 marks)
