Geo Isp: 10 Questions To Be Investigated

The document discusses the issue of collapsing fish stocks due to overfishing. It notes that 90% of fish stocks declined starting in 1950. Overfishing is the main cause but other factors like pollution and climate change also contribute. Atlantic cod, Mediterranean fish, and wild salmon off the British coast are among the most threatened. If overfishing continues it risks food security, economic stability, tourism, and ecosystem stability. Many stakeholders are involved including fishing industries, governments, conservation groups, and citizens who consume seafood. Examples of past collapses include the California sardine fishery in the 1950s. Scientists predict fish will become extinct by 2048 if no action is taken. Sustainable fishing practices and international agreements aim

GEO ISP
10 QUESTIONS TO BE INVESTIGATED
What is the collapse of fish?
It is when a certain fish species suffers a great decline and is close to extinction.

When did this start happening?

This started happening in 1950, when 90% of fish stocks declined.

What factors have impacted the depletion of fish species?

The main cause is overfishing, but others include, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, invasive species and changes in the environment (sometimes that alone).

Which fish are threatened the most of extinction?

Mediterranean fish, Atlantic cod, and wild salmon off the British west coast.

What are the risks of overfishing and eventual collapse of fish?

Global food security-Fish have many essential nutrients, so by overfishing we are declining the source of significant nutrients which might affect the food supply and security for generations to come. Economic security-When placing fish stocks in danger we also jeopardize the financial wellbeing of many people who rely on aquatic produces. Tourism is a very important foundation of income for some countries with beautiful marine life. Exporting fish in poverty devastated areas help relieve such circumstances. Coastal settlement-Overfishing and declining fish stocks may harm cultural beliefs for coastal communities that rely on the fishing industry and eco-tourism. Biological diversity and ecosystem stability-Fish depletion can change the function in which way the entire ecosystem runs by, and other components within the ocean. Coastal water quality-Overfishing may make coastal waters way more vulnerable to other humans and environmental instabilities.

Which stakeholders are involved in this predicament?

Fishing and related industries-Must keep significant control, long fishing seasons, and government subsidies. In addition, they take important consideration towards upholding fish stocks, healthily, to ensure their job placement in the future. Governments-Upholding fish stocks is to develop a profitable business, producing jobs for coastal populations, ensuring food safety, and maintaining coastal and marine ecosystems. International and Regional organizations-Such as, FAO and UNEP. FAO observes the condition of the fisheries in the world, encouraging the fishery management. When the businesses and governments take action in fishery management, they impact the development of policies for fishing. Science and Advisory bodies-They fund fishery management councils and institutions, international organizations, and national governments. These organizations arrange and evaluate fishery management strategies and give information in a scientific and technical way towards resolutions of fishery maintenance. Marine Conservation Non-governmental Organizations-These organizations enforce co-management, which is when the fishing industry works with the government on management jobs.

Members of the Public-consumers, choose to purchase different fish which can affect global demand for endangered and overfished species (Kjellrun Hiis Hauge, Belinda Cleeland, Douglas Clyde Wilson, Pg. 7, par. 4). Residents who live in coastal fishing communities, fishing is a significant export in which collapse of fish could cause a recession, putting a big toll on the overall population. Furthermore, marine species and habitats are an appealing and essential significance to conservationists and tourists, that after being devastated, are impossible to substitute.

Why are fishing practices, in many parts of the world, unsustainable, and what examples prove this?
Not enough tactics are put in place. There are too many fleets, fishing allowances, illegal fishing practices, and in general, low control of almost all fisheries. Specifically in long distance fisheries and in developing countries, can fish be caught by anyone because there are no property rights, that must be followed. Some examples that prove this are the collapse of the Californian sardine fishery in the 1950s, the Atlanto-Scandian herring fishery in 1972, the Northern cod fishery off the east coast of Canada in 1992, and the North Sea cod fishery in the last ten years.

How does this affect the environment?

It will change the function in which way the entire ecosystem runs by, and other components within the ocean. It also makes coastal waters way more vulnerable to other humans and environmental instabilities.

Why is it difficult to formulate authority based establishments towards the collapse of fish?
There are many stakeholders included in the management of fish stocks and are often far away from each other, making agreements more difficult to come to. Since the oceans are so vast it becomes harder to implicate regulations. Many fish and marine animals travel over large distances which means it would not be easy to appoint property rights to fish stocks. The reproduction rate of fish stocks differs in which case any form of establishment would depend on the type of fish stock. Environmental factors and natural variations affect whether the fish population will decline or even collapse. The kind of fishing technology used, may also decide the greatest establishment to sustain fisheries. Fish stocks may be difficult to quantify and evaluate precisely.

About how long will it be until fish become extinct from overfishing?
Scientists predict that fish will become extinct in 37 years, 2048.

How is this able to be reversed?

This could be reversed by using the concept of maintaining a sustainable yield of fish stocks. This is the process in which the amount of fishing would slow down to recuperate and reproduce at a greater frequency, which means greater catches from decreased fishing exertion. Decreased exertion means decreased energy use and other environmental effects caused by fishing. Higher catches means lower prices of fish produces and greater consumptions of protein. Subsequently, reducing the general stress placed on the environment by humans.

What has already been done about this that initiates the solution of fish extinction?
Several of many include, the FAO Code of Conduct for responsible fisheries and the UN Fish Stocks Agreement, in 1995. Also, the Rejkjavik Declaration on Responsible Fisheries in the Marine Ecosystem, in 2001, and the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.
