three days. Welcome back to those of you who have attended previous seminars and
trainings with me. We are so excited to be coming to you virtually for Breakthrough to
Success!

This manual has been designed to assist you in organizing and retaining what you will learn
in this seminar. Space is also provided in the back for your notes. The Canfield Training

harder for the host, as well as other attendees. We ask that you enable your webcam
during this event, as your speakers will be able to see you, and feel your energy,

EVER been a part of. PS - Be aware of your surroundings (for example, if you need to
use the restroom during the live sessions, and you take your computer with you so you
can still hear us, be sure to turn off your audio and video ;-)
2. BEING PRESENT: Really “listen” to the speakers: Being present is the best gift you
can give yourself! Resist the urge to take tons of notes (versus listening for and
capturing big takeaways) and keep your phones on do not disturb and turn your email
notifications off to minimize distractions. If you have children, set up a play area where
you can keep an eye on them while they are self-entertaining.
3. YOUR BEST YOU: Listen to your body: be your best self. Eat healthy and stay
hydrated and caffeinated! Plan ahead to have snacks on hand.
4. EXPANSION: Take the time during networking breaks and breakouts to connect with

Think about your answers to the questions below, and complete the following:

MY GAP MAP
Now that you’ve clearly defined where you are now (Wheel of Life Exercise — pg. 13), and
you’ve spent some time envisioning what a 10 would look like in each of those same
areas, let’s identify the gap. In the space below, you’ll see a section for each of the 7
categories from the Wheel of Life.
In the lower box, add details about where you are now and what your life looks and feels
like in that area. In the upper box, you’ll describe what life looks and feels like at a 10 in
that area. Essentially, the gap is your path from where you are to where you want to be.
Just like a car’s GPS, when you know both where you are now, and where you want to be,
you’re able to create a map from one point to the other. As we go through this exercise,
think about what specifically will help you close the gap in each of these areas and jot
down the ones that are obvious to you.
Tomorrow, as we work through reprogramming ourselves for success and talking about
what gets in the way, you may have new ideas to add here as well.

The mirror exercise is one of the simplest and most powerful self-esteem and self-
confidence building exercises in the world. Its purpose is to replace the normal negative
self-talk that dominates our thoughts with positive, self-affirming self-talk. It is an exercise
that should be performed every night for a minimum of 40 days.
INSTRUCTIONS
Starting tonight, before going to bed, stand in front of a mirror and appreciate yourself out
loud for all that you accomplished during the day. Start with a few seconds of looking into
the eyes of the person in the mirror — your mirror image of yourself, looking back at you.
Then start by saying your name, followed by appreciating yourself (out loud) for the
following things:
• Any achievements (business, financial, educational, personal, emotional)
• Any personal disciplines you kept (exercise, meditation, prayer, dietary)
• Any temptations that you did not give in to (eating dessert, lying, drinking too much,
staying up too late playing video games or surfing the internet, etc.)
Maintain eye contact with yourself throughout the exercise. When you are done, end the
exercise by continuing to look deeply into your own eyes and say, “I love you (your
name).” Then stand there for another few seconds to really feel the impact of the
experience — as if you were the one in the mirror who had just listened to all of this
appreciation. The trick during this last part is to not just turn away from the mirror feeling
embarrassed or thinking of yourself or the exercise as stupid.

“Let’s see … oh, and then you ate a really healthy lunch—soup and salad—and
you didn’t have the dessert that was offered. And you drank the 10 glasses of
water that you committed to drinking every day. Congratulations on that one!
“You stayed in a good mood all day today. You didn’t let other people’s
problems become your problems. It would have been easy to let Deborah’s
complaints get to you, but you didn’t. You were able to not feel personally
responsible for what happened to her. And you didn’t take anything she said
personally. Good job!
“Let’s see, you finished editing the new staff orientation manual, and you got a
really good start on scheduling the summer management training program.
And then you filled in your Daily Positive Focus Form before you left work. Oh,
and you appreciated your assistant for all of her contributions for the day. It
was great to see how she just lit up. And when you got home, you spent
quality time playing with the kids, especially Christopher, and then you read a
book to all of the kids. That was really special. And now you’re going to bed at
a good time again and not staying up all night surfing the net. You were great
today....
“And one more thing — Jack, I love you!”
It is not unusual to have a number of reactions the first few times you do this. They include
feeling silly, feeling embarrassed, feeling like crying (or actually crying), and generally
feeling uncomfortable. Occasionally, people have even reported breaking out in hives,
feeling hot and sweaty, or feeling a little light headed. These are natural and normal
reactions, as this is a very unfamiliar thing to be doing. We are not trained to acknowledge
ourselves. In fact, we are mostly trained to do the opposite: “Don’t toot your own horn.
Don’t get a swelled head. Don’t get a stuffed shirt. Pride is a sin.”
As you begin to act in more positive and nurturing ways to yourself, it is natural to have
physical and emotional reactions as you release the old negative self-judgments,
unrealistic expectations, parental wounds and so forth. If you experience any of these
things — and not all people do — don’t let them stop you. They are only temporary and
will pass after a few days of doing the exercise.
If you find yourself lying in bed, and you realize you haven’t done the exercise, get out of
bed and do it. The part of looking at yourself in the mirror is a very important part of the
exercise. Remember, you will only get as much out of this exercise as you put into it.

One last bit of advice: If you live with someone (spouse, children, roommate, parents), let
them know in advance that you will be doing this exercise each evening for a month or so.
You do not want them to walk in on you while you are doing it and think you have lost it!
Do this exercise for a minimum of 40 days. For the best results, do it every day for a whole
year.
PROCEDURE
While standing in front of a mirror and making eye contact with yourself...
1. Say your name.

working is to pay attention to the results you are currently
producing.”

In his groundbreaking book, The Game of Work, Charles Coonradt says that scorekeeping
stimulates us to create more of the positive outcomes we’re keeping track of. It actually
reinforces the behavior that created these outcomes in the first place.
Think about it. Your natural inclination is to always improve your score. If you were to keep
score on the five things that would advance your personal and professional objectives the
most, imagine how motivated you would be each time the numbers improved in your favor.
Below is an example of one of the tools I’ve used to keep track of new habits I want to
develop. We’ve also included a blank template for you to use over the next few weeks to
track your own progress as you develop new habits for success.

Now it’s your turn. What are some new habits you’d like to develop? Perhaps you’ve
already been working on some habits, but haven’t been tracking your progress. In the
spaces provided below write down 5-7 habits you’d like to track for the next 30 days.
Assign a daily point value to each that reflects the level of priority for each item. The daily
total should equal 100 total points. I recommend tracking at least one habit in each of the
four core areas from the Wheel of Life (Career/Business, Finances, Relationships & Health/
Fitness). You may decide to track one habit in all seven areas. Remember 5% more
responsibility from yesterday? This is a great way to track the activities you wrote down.
Then, because we all have a few bad habits we want to eliminate, add 1 or 2 negative
habits that you’d like to work to minimize and assign a negative point value to each.
For the next 30 days use this tracker (print off a new tracker each week) and see how you
can improve your score each week. You may also decide to reward yourself in some way if
you achieve a certain total number of points in any given week. Some of our students have
even made these trackers into a friendly competition where each person works on their
own set of habits, but compete on total points scored.
